obsolescence: What happened to the 24mm f/14 relay lens (snorkel) that Venus Optics had planned to build?

Now expected to start shipping from November 2018, $1500-1700 ex factory (or maybe that's ex-Hong Kong, check the website for more detail than I did on this point ..) price.

As an amateur I visited twice in the early 80's (when PK was much more special - there was no internet in those days ....) and the last half dozen or so. The shift to once a year combined with bringing the dates forward strikes me as an elementary marketing blunder - a 21 month gap would have caused far fewer absentees amongst exhibitors than you'll see (or rather not) after the reduction from 24 to 8 1/2 months between events. For me it's really simple: 2018 or 2019, but not both. No particular bias right now, I'll make my decision early September. I suspect 2019 will be a disaster even with all the discounts Koelnmesse will provide to exhibitors. The big boys will all be there of course but many smaller companies won't bother. Come to think of it, that's a reason in itself to go in 2018 and then wait until 2020 before revisiting. Decision made ! Writing a comment on dpreview does serve a purpose after all ....

My guess VR will replace drones as the hot topic in 2018.

On challenge For creative newbies only.. (2 comments in total)

RuthC: What a farce! Nearly twenty (20) of the entries in this 'For Creative Newbies Only' challenge are from people who have been DPR members for a number of years. This includes four in the top ten places. The Host should have disqualified them all, otherwise, why have a challenge specifically for this subset?

and they STILL haven't been disqualified !
something for the weekend maybe

JEROME NOLAS: So that's all for photokina? No more surprises? No major news? The only Panasonic saved the day (the whole show) with LX100? I expected more from Canikon and they don't care enough whatever you might say....

actually ... much FEWER changes versus 2 years ago than I can ever remember at Photokina.

Panasonic stressed 4k video and silent shutters, one manufacturer was on about 813 GB (I think the number was) pictures and newbie Chinese accessory companies are moving into glass filters to add to tripods and camera bags. Oh, and adding Metabones-style speed boosters to normal lens adapters. Most other things just getting incrementally better.
