NIK11: Thanks - nice to see DPRE continue to take an interest in the latest premium compact. Hopefully a review will follow.

Might be instructive to compare samples from the Oly XZ-10 - I don't understand why DPRE, along with IR and DXO, have ignored this innovative camera. If it underperforms, let's hear about it.

Except that samples at Davesdigicams suggest the XZ-10 performs very well for its sensor size and a German lab(digitalkamera) rated its IQ as premier league for a compact.

On article First Impressions Review: Using the Canon PowerShot G16 (354 comments in total)

DPRE says G16 has the same sensor as G15.

Canon UK says it's a (new) BSI version (Sony anyone?). Can someone from DPRE please confirm which is correct?

NIK11: Other Review sites are reporting the G16/S120 as having a new BSI sensor with claimed improvements to DR/low light.

If correct, could it be the Sony sensor and why haven't DPRE mentioned this?

No. According to DXO (and others), G15 uses a Canon homespun CMOS. Same for S100/110. No mention of BSI or Sony.

NIK11: Good to see more choice, but where's the built-in EVF?

Firstly, this is actually the first time I have made a comment about a Samsung camera in something like 2-3 years. Secondly, my comments about EVF's in general amount to no more than 5 or 6 posts in the last year. Hardly a 'big footprint'.
Sounds like you guys are having a bad hair day!

targut - Why don't you stretch your imagination and stop being a fanboy.
If cameras were perfect there would be no need for new models. Expressing one's preferences is what happens on a democratic gear forum. Suggest you get use to it.

Ha! Nothing snarky in wishing for a built-in EVF on the slimmest APSC models for portability and convenience. Pana managed it on a slim compact, I'm sure its coming to most swelte high end cameras eventually.

smatty: There was one single test that I cared about and that was to see how the Dynamic Range of the small X-Trans sensor in the X20 compared to the EXR sensor in the X10.

And while dpreview tested DR in the X10 it was omitted in the X20 review. WHY?

reply to rhlpetrus-
Did you notice about 18 months ago that DXO updated their test software, re-tested everything, and overnight most compact's DR improved by a wopping 1-2 stops? Seems like inflation to me!

Yes, the DPRE DR test is the only reliable alternative to DXO inflated figures being offered, albeit jpeg only. I think it's a shame DPRE have abandoned this, and A/F times as well.

I can work out resolution comparisons from any number of sites, but DR requires precise careful measurement which DPRE use to do so well.

mpgxsvcd: Why would anyone buy this for $500 when the LX7 was $280 last week. I can walk forward the extra few steps to save $220.

But can you frame properly in harsh sunlight using the LCD and can you get it into a small pocket?

This is not aimed at the LX7 buyer, but S110 etc with more zoom and better framing in harsh light.
Why not celebrate that we have more choice?

Bravo Pana for innovating and moving the envelope with a built-in EVF on the smallest camera yet. Let's hope this is not a one-off (like Nikon P60) and will become the norm for the enthusiast market.

I now feel pocketable compacts have 'arrived' where small film cameras stopped - handling wise. I imagine the micro 4/3rds crowd will be wondering why they have been left out of the (built-in) EVF party.

brianj: Interesting, it has the same size and type of sensor at the canon SX260HS, yet has not got as wide angle nor anywhere near as much zoom. Ah, I see, its called enthusiast because it sports a f1.8 aperture lens.

I wondered what the name 'enthusiast' meant!

chadley-chad....'why not plump for Sony RX100'.
Price mainly, also ergonomics. Oly must undercut Sony price substantially to make this work. Not everyone prints A3 size.

Thanks for the hands-on. I have high hopes of this camera.

The Sony 12mp sensor that we might assume the XZ10 sports has a good pedigree and I'd put money on it that its performance will be close enough to 1/1.7 not to matter(DOF ignored). With a fast lens, useful functionality, easy usability and comfortably pocketable, finally we have a niche camera that's been begging for some years. It's not breakthrough, but it has been missing from the line up of me too superzooms etc.

This looks like a winner, provided Oly prices it competitively.

Something about grandmothers and sucking eggs -

The hands-on dimensions you give with lens extended is of very limited value to the reader. However, the thickness with lens retracted (plus any removable lens cover) would be quite useful in determining how pocketable this might be.

What was fundamentally wrong with the earlier format?

Seems to me it's change for change's sake, overkill. I'm not impressed.

Would prefer that DPRE's 'valuable' resource was spent on camera reviews rather than this distraction.

NIK11: Am a little disappointed you've said nothing about DR, something many would be interested in.

I asked Andy Westlake in the S100 Preview comments section if DPRE would be comparing DR between S95/100, he replied 'of course'.

What happened?

Nick

Maybe someone should tell Andy!

It's a pity, I think you are missing an important trick with DR measurement, especially with premium compacts aimed at enthusiasts.

Thanks for listening.
