About me:

Long-time unskilled amateur.
Learned on Rolleiflex T using hand-held light meter.
Went to 35mm with a Konica T3 until mercury batteries were banned, then carried on with an FT-1 until film died.
Transitioned to pocket-size digital with original Canon Digital IXUS/ELPH.
Loved my PowerShot G15.
Skipped DSLRs completely.
Now getting back into more serious photography with EOS M gear.
Hoping to resist temptation of EOS R.

  • No corrections of any type applied. I like this lens and use it as an ultra-wide angle lens, primarily for landscapes as the OP does.  So long as it is centered on the horizon it works well for ...
  • I like this lens too. My review from some months ago: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4474678
  • I hate changing lenses when I am out and about, because it is a nuisance and because I don’t like the the possibility of any contamination getting into the camera sensor area. Even carrying an ...
  • For me, the answer is easy:  a second M body, for several reasons:  I already have a nice set of M lenses; I cannot imagine investing in a whole new set of lenses; I don’t want to carry 2 sets of ...
  • The 12mm has been on my wish list for a while now.  I am trying to resist for now because I am still a long way from fully exploring and appreciating my other lenses, but GAS might get the better ...
  • I have this lens and did a quick review of it a little while ago: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4474678#forum-post-64042753 It’s a great inexpensive novelty lens that I have enjoyed for ...
  • Replied in For $999
Ditto. This sums up my feelings exactly.  And experiences too, right down to the Tri-X. I bought into the M system a year ago, thinking it would be a stepping stone to R, but M has been so good ...
  • Another addition to this list needs to be this lens, which I have and am enjoying: Venus Laowa 65mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO And for some reason, this lens also does not show up in the Gear List ...
  • I agree with your assessment of this.  If many people have a problem with something, then ... it really is a problem.  Like others have mentioned here, one can read the manual and/or just figure it ...
  • It's C.Fn II Autofocus, item 3, in the menu system.  You will find the 3 "modes" listed there.
  • That is my conclusion as well. It is nice to be in a good place, and nice to have things to look forward to.
  • This pretty much sums up my thoughts. It’s wonderful to be in a good place, yet have things to look forward to.
  • I forgot to mention one other important reason why I’ve decided to remain solely with M for now: If I were to buy into the R system now, I’m not sure what I would buy. I have read most of the news, ...
  • Replied in Sigma temptation
I, too, have the Sigma 56 and think it’s great.  My positive experience with it has sorely tempted me to get the 16.  Sigma is offering a $50 discount on each of the 1.4 trio through the end of ...
  • Many thanks to everyone who took the time to share their thoughts and perspectives, which I have read through several times to make sure I have taken it all in.  Much of value there to me, and ...
  • I have an M5 and an M6II, and use both.  I actually got the M6II first, then got the M5 later only because I wanted a 2nd M body for backup, and BH had a super sale on M5 bodies for a very short ...
  • Created discussion thread Have M, why would I want R?
OK, it’s not as simple as that. Here are the parameters: (1) I’m not a professional - I’m just taking pictures for personal satisfaction and as a “visual diary” of my life.  I don’t make any money from ...
  • Thanks.  In my limited experience I have definitely found that working distance is a factor, and that wide angle is difficult for macro. I also agree that smaller is better, because of the ...
  • Thanks, some good tips here. I think the main reason I like the Laowa 65 better for macro than the Canon 28 is the “working distance” thing.
  • Thanks, I found this interesting, especially since it provides independent validation that the non-Canon lenses that I already have (or am considering) perform well, at least on a different brand ...
