milkod2001: Canon should have called R3 R1 and sell it as flagship camera at $6500. R3 at $6000 feels like huge rip off. Great camera but super pricey. Could only be justified if it was meant as flagship camera best of the best Canon has.

The R3 isn't any flagship... The flagship is the R5, with almost twice the resolution and probably better DR... Or maybe the flagship will be the R1, combining speed and resolution, competing against the A1...

mosc: Also, I think calling this the R3 instead of the R1 has more to do with protecting the 1D as a "still purchasable new" retail flagship product than it does leaving room for some higher end model. I'm sure they will someday combine the speed of the R3 with the resolution of the R5 (8K remember) and that alone, body changes from the R3 aside, would be enough to sell a new "R1" body but like I said, I think this is more to do with protecting their EF system.

Why would Canon want to protect their EF system, when they can sell new cameras and at the same time new lenses with the R mount... I think the R1 will combine the R3's speed with R5's resolution (the second possibility you suggested).

@NotReality Take part to the GFX facebook pages, you will see that many professionals work with the GFX system... They don't work at the Olympic Games or visit press conferences, they do studio work or landscape photography... With now improved and cheaper cameras, Fujifilm will sell even more... The GFX system is a unique offering right in between A7Riv/R5 and Phase One...

Mac McCreery: Canon has destroyed Sony here. Canon have the bigger rep. Better lenses. Are already embedded in the market. But credit
to Sony as you will always be the apsiring gearhead system in the 21st Century.

Who has the best 50mm f1.2? Not Canon, it's Sony... Just read the reviews and comparisons... Sony also has the best 35mm f1.4, 135mm f1.8, and many more... Canon filled the gap with new excellent cameras, but hasn't yet "destroyed" Sony... Canon doesn't have yet a camera that can do everything (e.g. sports but also landscape), like Sony's A1...

I agree with all of you... I just wanted to react to the initial comment... Fujifilm is very innovating too... In respect to the Eye Control AF, I hope Canon will integrate that technology in cameras like R5... For me R5 is much more interesting than R3...

Fujifilm hasn't any camera that comes close to the Canon R3.... but Canon hasn't either any camera that comes close to the GFX 100S... Interesting detail: both cameras cost the same...

You for sure don't have a GFX 100S, you wouldn't write that...

@Magnar Yes... old knowledge may not be the truth that time...

@10-75 The dynamic range of the R3 is likely to be inferior to the R5's dynamic range... and I'm sure the durability of an R5 is excellent...
@Magnar I'm not sure that fashion or landscape photography is that much "specialized".. Some pros need speed, others pros need IQ and resolution... If you need the very best IQ then for the same price of an R3 you can get a Fujifilm GFX 100S, 100 MPix & fantastic DR, but quite slow...

If you're happy with your R5, what's the problem if Canon presents a camera to suit other needs? I have a Sony A7Riv, I won´'t either buy an A1 that has lower resolution, as I don't care at all for speed...

Big Papi: I think this is a great camera, but it puts the a1 in a very good spot. I love my R5's and don't plan on upgrading to the R3 because I'm spoiled with a high MP count. The R5's battery life, card combination and articulating screen are really my only complaints (yes, I prefer a tilt screen). Personally, if I was a professional debating Canon or Sony, I would jump on that a1 like many of my colleagues are doing.

Why then write "upgrading to the R3"... For some photographers it's an upgrade, for others it's a downgrade...

lnsmr: Sony A1, only $500 more, probably makes more sense in most aspects, but the eye control focus makes a huge difference in many applications. Just preordered on BH. Wish Canon would make a compact body with eye control focus for street photography.

@Kona Mike The R5 is way better than the R3, for a photographer like me... I would NEVER change change an R5 for an R3... Hopefully the R1 will succeed to combine all the needs in one single camera, the R5's resolution and DR with R3's speed...

steelhead3: Will the old dinosaur 1DXIII drop now to a suggested price of $2500?

@Kona Mike I did it with a Canon 5D (12 MPix), but it's a big disappointment opening these files today, seing so little detail... For landscape choose rather the R5... The R5 may also have better dynamic range...

ZeroOne01: The professional Mirrorless cameras era just started with this R3. Next Z9.

You forgot the Sony A1 that can do everything, not only sports and photojournalism... You forgot also the Fujifilm GFX 100S, for professional fashion and landscape photographers (no sports with the GFX 100S)....

The R3 is stunning, but does only half an A1 can do... You won't shoot landscape with an R3... The A1 is a camera that can do everything... Canon knows that and therefore didn't name the R3 "R1"... I hope an R1 is coming soon...

With a heavy lens, you better have a light camera... You anyway grab the lens, not the camera...

The Canon R3 is only for sports & photojournalism... The Sony A1 is for everything...
