Tony Northrup: RIP Sigma fp

A well respected Scottish Pro Photographer I know was offered a Sigma camera in return for an endorsement. After using it for a few days he remarked to me (using his dry Glaswegian humour) that "It was about as useful as a raspberry flavoured suppository." ;-)

DougDolde: I would never buy a Sony camera !

Thanks for letting me know mate. I'll remember that in future when I'm never, ever, buying you a mirrorless camera for your birthday. :)))

Maybe it's a European thing, but there is something really unsettling to me about someone who feels the need to wear clothing with their own name on it.

It's always pretty depressing when your team gets thrashed 8 or 9 goals to nil - particularly so when you know the first 3 or four goals were own goals. It's always sad watching a once great team publicly flounder. Players running about aimlessly, following orders from a Manager with no real football pedigree, trying to resolve a completely hopeless situation which has been brought on by their own ineptitude and lack of ability to compete. Everyone in the stadium, even their die hard fans know they are beaten, have lost badly, and are never going to recover. It's just a long, tortuously slow journey until the final whistle.

QuarryCat: I have done tests with EOS 5DSR - Sony has a lot to do, to deliver such a good low noise performance and such an incredible sharpness... we will see what reality brings. Canon's ISO 6400 is realistic and even Alpha 7s is at 6400 ISO just 1 1/2 Steps finer at 12 MP compared to 51 MP.
You can use 51 MP at 1600 ISO with best sharpness on the market and very low noise. Even 3200 is realy good and surpasses EOS 5D3 or Nikon D810.
But for now, the EOS 5DSR is the king of the crowd - by far!

I'm not pushing Sony mate - don't misinterpret me. I'm just telling the truth and stating facts. Everyone with a modicum of intelligence knows Canons sensor technology is way behind Sony's in performance. After shooting Nikon/Sony I couldn't use a Canon body again. Too much green/magenta noise in the shadows even at base ISO. Dynamic range is awful too - no latitude for simple shadow recovery. The 5DS/R Models are a last ditch attempt to con people into buying old sensor tech wrapped up in a shiny high resolution camera. I wouldn't use one even if they gave me one for free (which they did) ;-)))

Happy to see you have an opinion though mate. As Harry Callahan said...
;-)))

Interesting: I've been doing tests with a 5DSR too and found it awful compared to the D800, D810 and A7R. It has the same terrible sensor noise as the older 5D3 and 5D2, The Green/Magenta noise patterns in the shadow areas and really poor Dynamic range are really unacceptable compared to the Sony sensors. Unless a miracle happens Canon will never catch up with the advancements Sony have made. Anyone who thinks otherwise has either A: never used a Nikon or Sony or 2: Is severely deluded.

Peiasdf: Another thing, the well is bigger than 16mp on m4/3 and 24/28mp in APS-C so DR and per-pixel sharpness are going to be at least as good as those sensors. This is SONY's next gen sensor afterall.

The sensor was designed and manufactured completely in house by Canon. No Sony Involvment whatsoever. Confirmed categorically by Canon's Chuck Westfall.

Peiasdf: SONY sensor so you know it is gonna kick ass and taking names (and give those name to other people). I know this model is not a replacement for 5D3 and instead will be selling next to 5D4 but Canon should just release the R version. Two version with the difference being the filter is not going to help with inventory management.

Designed and manufactured by Canon. No Sony Involvement. Confirmed categorically by Canon's Chuck Westfall.

Have you seen the sample images? The pattern noise in the shadows is typical of Canons poor DR.

Well... they are from Amsterdam after all. ;-)))

Thought this was a wind up when I first viewed it. ;-))) Dutch (as in based in Holland) fashion label G-Star has been well known in the UK for some considerable time as the chav/neds favourite brand, indeed it is deemed much cooler not to be seen wearing it. ;-)

Sounds like someone needs to "re-imagine" their common sense. Almost (but not quite) as hilarious as the Frankenblad Lunar.

These guys really are a bunch of jokers... they rip people off for $100 plus for film presets that they say mimic real film - which is impossible! and now this... You'd need to be a mug to fall for their guff!

Francis Carver: Why is everything Leica makes so butt-ugly?

Also, Leica's brain trust should have been following DP Review comments. They are now getting neck-deep into a legacy old school format (medium format) with their ungainly S model, when a lot of previously FF 135 format shooters are in fact moving down to APS-C, Micro 4/3rd, and 1-inch.

I guess with Leica, big and heavy and bulky somehow equates beautiful?

Heck, at least they did not come up with a brand new "Jumbo Imax" form factor and sensor camera this time around.

Oh... you shoot weddings.... that explains it! ;-))))

@cjhwang; What camera leads the Dynamic range chart at DXO?

CameraLabTester: Nice Manga cartoon...

The grip is drawn like it is sharp enough to cut the fingers.

The flash hot shoe looks like from a 1960's era.

Legend:

G: Cupcake

2: Lego Logo

.
E**: Lego Part

1: Mini CD/DVD player

F: Mismatch reminder buttons (to remind users the lens housing and the grip are totally mismatched, forever)

P: Annoyance button. Tickles the right palm to constantly annoy users. Very nice feature.

Yeah, you're definitely out of your box ;-)))
