daniel ackerman: I have no doubts that the new prime lenses outperform the previous ones, my problem as a landscaper is that I cannot see a significant difference. I still use in my outings, where small and light lenses are welcome, my old nikon 135 f3.5 and 200mm f4 Ais with tremendous results, including excellent copies 70x100 cm, even some 100x150cms with all the desirable detail
Exactly. I'm a landscaper too. Tbh I'm not even sure the newer generation of lenses (e.g. Nikon's Z range produced for the mirrorless Z6 & Z7) do outperform Nikon's older F mount lenses. At least, not from an artistic perspective. Ansel Adams produced some remarkable work, full of film grain & character, with the equivalent of a box brownie. So maybe, when it comes to atmospheric image making, its less about camera & lens, more about what the photographer brings to the party i.e. how he/she interprets the scene & captures the shot. All that said, I currently use a D750 & D810. But I do hanker for an opportunity to acquire a 'medium format' camera, which would capture more detail. Maybe something like Fujifilm's GFX 50R. Unfortunately it ain't likely to happen any time soon. I'd need to invest in 2 Fuji lenses too. So my new MF camera & lenses would cost slightly north of £7k. Are the benefits of a larger MF sensor worth the lolly ? For a pro, probably. For me, probably not.
