Z9 serial numbers (continuation thread)

The NPS priority stopped once shipping started i.e. Only pre orders before that date.
There never was any NPS priority here. It all comes down to how good a friends you are with a shop owner.
Can you become a better “friend” paying more and/or buying more items, e.g. additional lenses, etc.?

I'm sure some shops will work that way. But i have no need for big tele's, i don't do sports or nature, and the one expensive Z lens i would buy isn't out yet.

Also with the shop situation around here the last 10 years, it's hard to have a regular shop.

Many have gone out of business, or are no longer selling Nikon (pro) stuff.

Nikon NPS members get priority - and generally seem to get a Z9 in about 4 weeks.
I don't know where you are, but i'm in EU, i'm NPS and there is no priority at all for NPS or professionals.
There has been NPS priority to LCE, Bass and Bligh and reported by Grays of Westminster, all in the UK; using the NPS order system.

Good to see that at least there NPS has some value. Here it's been watered down to not much more than a 10% discount on sensor cleaning.

Hi,

Neither of my local shops would be inclined to call you Friend by your just showing up wanting to buy anything. You become Friend by showing up regularly buying stuff. Doesn't have to be big ticket items. It has to be a case of them recognizing you as you walk thru the door.

Then you move up the list of Friends by taking some time to talk with the staff. Coming in to share some photographic news, show some shots, discuss what worked well and what didn't, etc. They all shoot as well and so it's a two way communication.

Then they prioritize their working Pro shooters, even if they aren't in a manufacturer Pro group (i.e. NPS). After that, the semi-pros and on down the line.

Someone they never saw before would wind up on the bottom of the list.

And what that means Z9 wise is that you could be already on the list, but the day I walk in and order a Z9 I'm going to get it ahead of you. And behind any NPS member and any non NPS but working Pro that came in after me.

And that's a difference between a local shop and a large online retailer. The latter will have a first come, first served list for non NPS regardless of what other status they might have. But it's going to be a much longer list and subsequent wait.

Me, I rarely buy from the Big Online places. And then stuff they carry which aren't things either local shop has or can get. Otherwise, it's always one of those two local shops. One of which is big when it comes to used gear and medium format equipment. The other sells printers and such which the first one doesn't. So I get to both on a regular basis.

Of course both sell Nikon Z. So, that'd be a tough call, which to buy a Z9 from. Fortunately I am not in the market just yet. I am still flushing out a medium format system which is more appropriate for my photography needs. The Df suffices for small format.

Hi,

As opposed to never, or rarely, using the gear, rather they shoot shots of the gear -and boxes it comes in- and post those shots to various forums....

Dunno how to pull that off...ensuring that buyers actually use the stuff....

For me, the Z9 is the first model I actually want. That is, would use rather than my Df and medium format gear. But I know I would not use it hot and heavy. Heck, my Kodak 760c bought new in 2003 and shuffled off to secondary usage saw only 80k shots she it was my primary body. I am not a prolific shooter.

So, I will eventually get a Z9. And probably buy it new. But I surely don't need it early on. And there are those who do. And I have, so far, not succumbed to the attempts from either of my local shops trying to tell me I need one sooner rather than later.

I did buy a couple used medium format lenses they had sitting in their used display cases for quite a while though. I haven't bought a small format lens since I bought the Df in 2018.

But, then I buy gear to make use of and not sit around looking pretty. ;)

My Df is sitting around looking pretty. I have a hard time reaching for it over the Z6 for anything, really....

This must be frustrating to highly skilled photographers waiting in the delivery queue
No kidding, my D800 failed on me suddenly over 2 months ago and i'm in urgent need of a body to get my work done.

I'm on several "waiting lists" but nobody will tell me if i'll have a body to get my jobs done end of this month.
If you want one bad enough they are around to purchase. I guy here from UK had a 2nd one forsale or send back to Nikon and he had no takers.. The Z9 is not the only camera on the market that is forsale and unstuck if you need a camera that bad. I have one Z9 and already had 2 more I passed on here in USA as 1 is enough for me at the moment since i can not find my 2 9 lenses in stock to purchase for it.... There is a BNIB Z9 at retail price on EBAY UK right now to if you want and need one that bad....

Today I received a Nikon Z9 which I ordered online via B&H yesterday (no waiting list nor NPS member).

My Z9 Serial Number from B&H is now up to 30203xx.

More information about my experience buying this Nikon Z9 camera without having to wait for it from B&H's website 2 days ago are in this thread if you are interested:

Wonder why several people are now getting their Z9's in the 3020xx to 3021xx range all the sudden? Seems like quite a jump from previously reported Z9s with much lower U.S. serial numbers. Did they skip a range of serial numbers, to denote those Z9s with Firmware 2.0 pre-installed on them, or did Nikon just produce a whole bunch of Z9s between April and June?

For reasons not known to us; Nikon "skipped" Z9 10,000 serial numbers about 3 months ago.

It is perhaps possible that Nikon has been quietly building a new larger Z9 production facility and the number 2 in the middle of the serial number distinguishes which camera model came from which production line.

This is it no more than speculation on my part with no evidence as to why the number 2 in the serial number was introduced.

Serial numbers on the Z9 are electronically printed on the label attached underneath the flip out rear monitor. Some detective work by someone with access to old and new serial number Z9s might identify if the scan code on the labels has been changed.

In lots of ways good photography is much more about how equipment is used rather than anything else.

Interesting detectivework/theory, now how long before a discount, or exchange offer :-)

Around April 26, 2022, we noticed that US Z9 serial number had a sudden jump from 3008### to 3018###; it suddenly went up by around 10K as we discussed earlier on this thread: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/66116441

Actually when I first saw 3018, I asked the person who posted it whether he had a typo.

It is merely our assumption that the serial number jumped by exactly 10,000. But nobody outside of Nikon knows the reason behind it.
