question got posted by mistake before i could finish. Like many people I have camera lust and what is I won the lottery etc. For some reason there seems to be not much talk good or bad on this D5. Just wondered if it was so expensive to limit discussion or just a lack of interest. Maybe i should lust something else like Rachel Welch.

Neither, when it was first out there were a number of threads, on various boards, discussing the updates and there was/is a general consensus that it is a great body. The low ISO DR compliant has been, for the most part, ignored as sports/wildlife/PJ users are not impacted by it.

Yes, I figured the low iso dr compliant was not a general consensus, probably because the main use for this camera is sports and wildlife at high shutter speeds and iso speeds. I think maybe most people who own this camera are out using them and not spending much time on a forum. I had a d4 and if the d5 is better, especially auto focus wise, its got to be a wonderful camera.

Perhapsbd5 users are too busy shooting.

My guess is because it is a $6,500 camera. That limits it to largely pro's, who are busy making a living with it, and not posting on forums like us amateurs. 😊

I have one and use it a lot, it's an outstanding performer, reliable and I love it.

What would you like to talk about?

That just it, these cameras are so good there is not much negative to talk about. I had a d4 and it just worked with a lot less post processing than with my now d810. If I could afford a d5 I would jump at it. Most of my photography is of wildlife and birds mostly.

The d5 would be a wonderful camera for events, weddings and so on.

Most of my shooting is wildlife and birds, and the D5 is my body of choice until I run out of focal length for a proper framing, then the D500 comes out of the bag.

Hi Jay,

I think it's a combination of reasons.
The D5 is an evolution model, not a revolution. And that reflects in the number of questions is asked (talked about) for.

The D5 has only a very small part of the market. I don't own a D4(S) camera myself, but the majority of my Nikon colleagues use a D4(S) and they will toss it in for a D5 when their D4(S) is breaking down or not delivering anymore what their customers ask for - that of good photography. I don't know any one who has that need yet, now I don't know many PJ's using Nikon most of my colleagues use Canon. I've seen only several times D5's 'in the wild' The new Canon 1DX Mark II will show up much more, simple there are more PJ's using Canon.

The D5 is a 'perfect' camera, you could imagine that there would be much more talks when it did not perform so well as expected

The D5 has a high price - The D500 will deliver similar excellent imagery (till on 6400) as well with best AF/fast performances of any crop sensor camera - for a third of the price. I chose myself to replace my 'battered' D3S with a D500 instead with a D4S or a D5. The price of the D500 in relation to the specs are for me the main reason. Also I want to have some 'tool savings' for next year! :-)

If I spend $6k on a camera, I'll spend more time shooting and *much* less time on internet forums. I'd be Randy Marsh during the Great Guinea Pig invasion, annoying the whole family in the process.

I think the D500 (which came out of the blue) took alot of the excitement. I was fully intending on replacing my D3 with the D5 but now will be getting the D500 for kids sports to compliment my D810. Easier to carry, easier on the wallet, more reach out of any giving lens - the D500 makes so much more sense for most except for the true sports professional. And even then...

I had the very same thoughts as You have now but at the last minute I changed my mind and got the D 5 instead of the D 500 or the 1Dx MK II... After more then 10 000 clicks later I think it was the best move I`ve ever made...

I think you said it, its expensive and not a lot of folk have the cash to buy one, there are posts on here time to time and for the most all positive I'm glad to say. :-D

Glo,

What I would like to see more of from the D5 are RAW photos taken of scenes that have fairly wide dynamic range to them captured at ISO 100 that do not need to be pushed three to five stops in post in order to open up the image. I know that this is not the supposed designed purpose of the D5 but I find it a little hard to believe that this camera would perform as poorly as some seem to indicate at its base ISO especially in RAW. There are a large number of images taken as jpgs at high ISOs but it is very difficult to find any RAW D5 files taken at ISO 100 covering a wide dynamic range. Since you have a D5 perhaps you could capture a few RAW images at ISO 100 and make them available in Dropbox for evaluation?

Regards,

Frank

Nice. Very nice. And THANKS for showing other wanna-be sports photogs that high shutter speeds are often necessary - like your 1/3200 to 1/5000 of a second shots! Heck, even action dog shots often require 1/4000 to 1/8000 speeds. :) Thanks again for posting with EXIF. GREAT lens, by-the-way. SI all the way.
