Which would you have picked?

Better use of the frame makes that expression more clear and harmonic.

  1. 1 or #3 with a slight preference for #1. For me #2 just doesn't work. Maybe if there were more of it in the frame, but not as it is.

  1. 1 [n/t]

I'd definitely go for the first one. It has a really nice balance to it and makes me think of an updated version of an image I might have seen in an old family cookbook or some such thing in the Seventies.

A pretty bold and striking image, really.

Ye Cust.
A recent challenge had "peas" as the subject. I got "inspired" and
put the peas in a black calla (actually purple) and shot away.
Here are the three I was choosing from. Which would you have
chosen?

I would have used 3, BUT, I would have joined the peas together somehow so they were in a straight line, as they are in a pod

individually they are all good but when compared.

I like the encapsulating curve of the calla above the peas in #1 and it all seems to balance, the green is a third of the black which is a third of the orange (whether my comment has any technical or artistic merit I do not know).

Now I can't figure out why I find #3 less appealing, I wonder (IMHO) if it is more to do with the framing and image size of the shot within the DPreview thread border rather than the image itself?.

And in fact the more I think about it the more I like #3, which when I first looked was my least favourite !

Ian, yes I am so confused.

because it seems to have the best balance. Dont know how to explain it better.

I like the abstract look of nr. 2 as well.

I think #1 has the best balance. The horizontal format seems to fit better than the verical, which somehow looks cramped. #2 looks too artificial or forced.
