Which printer do you use?

I have recently purchased a Canon IP8500 8 cartidge printer and drool over the quality of the pics every time I print. So I was wondering what printers other users are using and what their thoughts are on the print quality of the FZ20 pics?

I use an Epson R800, which produces glorious results, especially as it has a gloss optimiser cartridge.

I have to say though that it seems to absolutely eat ink..which makes it quite expensive to run.

Have you tried to print on CDRs or DVDRs with your Canon? I previously had a Canon i965 which only seemed to print reliably on about 2 different brands of printable disc. It also had a really clunky assembly that had to be connected whenever you wanted to print onto a disc..a real pain, whereas the R800 just has a slot in tray.

I don't own a printer - I let my pictures be "developed" by some internet service center - although lately I used a local big chain to print them for me - easier to burn a CD and go to them then to upload god-who-knows-how-many-megabytes with the silly 128Kbits cap on my DSL line. After a few days I can get my photos from them, or let them send the photos to me via postal service.

I really don't want to print 100+ pictures with a inkjet printer :)

The quality is excellent, pictures can be left lying on the window sill for a year and hardly loose any color at all and are even mildly waterproof (spilled water for the plants on my testpicture :)

Although most of the photolabs here can only do glossy pictures (for some moon shots matte is much better) and you need to find one who doesn't fiddle (er "autocorrect") you photos.

Cheers,

Tels

A good old HP DJ870cxi workhorse that's not really up to photos, plus one of HP's poorer efforts, a newer A2 printer with good postscript but a truly abysmal paper feed (chronic for slippage, pathetic for pickup).

For prints from the FZ20 will go to a photography shop a few miles away, if necessary I could adjust the image settings on their computer for myself (that's with knowing the owners, not a standard service).

But for years now have been getting graphic or photo images output onto card (coated and uncoated) from the big colour photocopier at a printers I use; ideal for A2.

I do lots of printing and need good quality and cheap ink. The Epsons and inkjetrefill.com fill the bill. I have used online for some bigger prints but love "digital darkroom" work.

After alot research i will ordering the hi-ti 730.prints 8x10 or larger will be done at my local Costco.

Disclaimer: I'm not a pro and I'm not trying to make prints good enough to sell. Nor am I trying to drive myself crazy trying to make sure I've made the best possible purchase in the universe (like some people on other threads talking about this camera and that one). I'm just here to enjoy my hobby, and share the enjoyment.

That said, I typically make 4x6 prints to share with family and friends. All agree that it is hard to tell that my HP 7960 prints are made from a home computer, even if Ofoto or some other higher end printer might do "better." I enjoy the quality of the prints off the 7960, and I'm reasonably picky (this is my 4th printer in the past couple of years). However, if I've got a LOT of prints I want to send off to different people. I use Ofoto, since it does get tedious printing out a lot of photos to pack up and mail. And it's probably not any more expensive. I use my home printer when immediacy is an issue.

Hi everyone

Have been evaluating between printers for the last week and narrowed down to Epson 8XXX and the Canon 5000 and 8500.

I fond that the Espon gives a more neutral colour and captures the intend of the pics - subject is hilited and rest blends into the background. But the Canon prints are more striking for viewing - enhances the subject and other parts of the pics as well. Need to re-print and disable the HIGH mode before reaching a final conclusion.

Canon I865 - quality simple blows the rest away, its been replaced now by newer versions though.

If it's an inkjet they will run!

I use an HP 5550. I get excellent prints, however, I do not print a lot just because of the expense, unless it's a print I need right away. Between paper and ink cartridges, it is much cheaper to upload them to a professional service. I use Shutterfly, bulk order and get them for 22 cents a shot. Then I just wait for the mailman.

I got REALLY tired of family and friends asking me if they could 'get a copy' of a particular print. Now I just upload the shots from a family gathering and do an on-line share. If they like them enough, they can order (and pay for) their own prints!

I use a Canon i850 and if the new ones are any better they would be unbelieveable.

One tip for the 4 X 6 Prints, I use the easyprint software and put 4 on a 8.5 X 11 sheet and use a cutter to separate , that really cuts the cost.

And I know it is only 4 X 5 1/2 but thats Ok with me.
I printed 1000 photos from my vacation for $90
$50 for the paper and $40 for 6 ink tanks.

ive compared them all, apart from the new canons - and the old i8xx series easily beat any epson and hp on the market - regardless of price! (the canon is only around £130 - espon r800 talking £300+)

the canon does full bordless printing / direct to disc etc etc.

having been a BIG epson fan for years, when i saw some prints off of the canon one day, i was just blown away by the definition and the colour it produced - and guess what - its damn fast too!

(local market I used here, this is their online webpage)
1000 Bilder 150,00 €
Transferpauschale + ggf. Porto & Verpackung * 1,95 €
Gesamtpreis 151,95 €
(I only pay 0.65 Euro for "shipping&handling" since I fetch them from their store - not that it matters :)

150 Euros should be about 120 dollar, but keep in mind that most things here are overpriced (one would think that a camera/laptop etc which seels for 1000 dollars in the USA would be less than 900 euros here. In reality it is usually 1100 Euro or more...)

I have not checked whether this is the cheapest online printer. Prices seem to fall every month, though. I know I paid over 5 Euros for 20cmx30cm print, nowadays you get them under 2 Euro.
Ihre Auswahl kostet auf einem Tintenstrahldrucker 845,70 € .
The say it would cost me 845 Euro on a inkjet - no idea how they calculate this.

I usually print 13cmx18cm (I find my images deserve no less than that :) and occasionally 20cmx30cm (A4).

However, I have selected slightly over 110 images from my last vacation, and even this is torture for anyone to view. I dunno why I would want to print 1000 photos and then where to store them, or even show them to someone. The latter would probably end me dead and stuffed with my "precioussss prints" due to "cruelty to viewer" :)

Best wishes,

HP, Epson and Canon printers all produce good results these days. The differences are only clear if you compare prints side by side.

I did a comparison of the resolution of different printers here (about 3/4 way down) http://faq.arstechnica.com/link.php?i=1754

Although now a bit dated, the main points still hold. I still use the Canon S900 myself and the newer models are better. I print 8” x 10” 99% of the time and keep the cost down by using bulk ink from http://www.inkjetgoodies.com (buy the 6 color kit & replacement cartridges) and paper from http://www.redriverpaper.com #1656 68lb. UltraPro Gloss 8.5x11 100 Sheets $29.99 or cheaper when seconds are on sale. This results in an 8 x10 print for ~$0.60

I love the quality of the print but the thing I really like is the clear individual cartridges and the ability to refill them yourself if you wish. You don't have to depend on the machine to tell you the ink is low although it does that. All the others "give you" the machine than hang you for the ink. Each of the cartridge cost about $11 and you only buy the one you need.

canon i865, which produces excellent prints.. 6x4 for family, or checking my post -processing efforts.. A4 for the wall if I get something I like. Holiday shots, or anything over a dozen or so, I upload to an on-line printer.

the canon's are quick and excellent; but the ink is expensive, hence the above.
