***Where to go now thread Pt2***

I think we’re at a bit of a turning point here - there is only one DPReview, and one community now looking for somewhere new to continue.

Naturally many have tried to jump into the gap that’s opened up, and offered their own solutions, from Facebook groups to repurposed or existing forums etc. But ultimately not all of them can succeed. More importantly, this community is only going to survive if we stick together - spreading ourselves too thinly across too many sites will just mean a lot of dead and empty forums, none of which are viable in the long term.

I’m not connected to https://dprevived.com in any way (other than membership) but right now, amongst the new forums that have sprung up, it is the clear leader. It has around 3x the membership of DPRforum for example, and 5x the posts. It has ambitions to be more than just a forum and it’s built on a solid, new, developing technology base that can grow and improve around the site. There’s an open and transparent discussion going on right now about moderation, new features, and where it all goes next.

DPReview is closing in ten days. This is the time to make the move. Sign up and start your next conversation at DPRevived - it’s the future!
I do not like looking at a big white screen in the am. lol
Are you going to like looking at this place in ten days when it goes “read only”?

Dark mode, threaded view, all that stuff is coming. Rome wasn’t built in a day. The point is DPRevived is the best hope we have right now of continuing this place.

Some other forums may look more together right now because they have a darker theme or whatever, but that’s simply because they’re using basic, off-the-peg forum software that will never be anything more than it is now. DPRevived is built on a much stronger foundation and is being actively developed and improved; it can be custom designed around what the community wants moving forward, and also expand the site beyond being just a forum in future.
Just making it apparent what it needs. Communicating. Nothing more, or less. Relax bud.

Where to go now? For me, it's outside taking photos! While I don't spend a lot of time on this site (less than 300 posts in nearly 5 years), I can use this time to go out and take more photographs and edit the ones I have.

I think it's something we'll have fixed in a very short while.

Excellent. You guys are moving fast.

It's impressive, Bob.

Now well over 1700 refugees!

Kinda preferring the look, feel a usability of DPRforum.com, but it seems like DPrevived has more momentum at the moment. Perhaps both can prosper eventually?

DPRevived may be the future (only time will tell) but right now the format / layout / appearance is horrendous.

Honestly… it’s just different. But the key question is, can it be changed in time to suit different tastes, and the answer is a definite yes.
Quite a few new joiners have praised it. But we know that most experienced DPReviewers don't think much of it. We'll be making some cosmetic changes very quickly.

*bump*

This is the thread to which I was referring in my recent guidance post:

DPRevived seems to be gaining a lot of traction with DPR users looking for a new home. The well regarded M43 weekly thread has taken up a new home there it seems.

Talk Photography is on my list too. They have a nice "Projects" category.

Of course we can join multiple forums and see which one pans out best for us personally.

In this thread, we can discuss where we'll go after April 10.

I'll take this opportunity to plug the new Facebook Group I started for that purpose. It's going great so far; 77 members since yesterday.

No, it's not the same as a classical forum like we have here, but it can be customized, too. For example, you can select whether you want to see the newest posts, newest threads, etc. You can customize how many updates Facebook gives you, etc.

So far, it is more light-hearted, and more about photography than gear, but of course gear discussions can be made too.

Another user (Asher) suggested his forum:

https://openphotographyforums.com/forums/

He provides it free of charge as a pay-it-forward thing. Seems like a stand-up guy!

He's willing to listen to feedback on how to improve it.

Edit 3/24/2023: This seems like a nice place to call build up and call home. I've joined up here as well: https://camera-info.com/photocommunity/
My opinions are my own and not those of DPR or its administration. They carry no 'special' value (except to me and Lacie of course)

There seem to be lots of choices, so very interesting to see what one might have been missing. Of the newer ones, the FB offering is looking better and better.

One of the problems with FB is that you can’t control or even influence what you get to see
Groups are different. You become a member of a group, when you go visit the group you see everything that was posted just like when you enter a forum here. For photography, it is even simpler since photographs are classified as "media" at the bottom right or side of a group is all the media posted in chronological order, so you can click on the "see all media" and see all the new images posted and click on any of them you want to see more of, comment or read others comments.

In regards to your timeline, there is also a setting you can change that gives you more control instead of FB showing you what they think you want to see (default setting) you can set it to see things in a chronological order.

That's not necessarily true. In many respects it's easier to go back to any particular discussion. And it's all separated in different catagories.

Each group is kept all intact.
