What to Charge With A Different Twist

It occurs to me that you made two mistakes a professional would not do: 1) You took the liberty of shooting the photo without him because you got impatient waiting for him & 2) You made some low resolution prints, again out of impatience it would seem. So now you're paying for #1 by having to reshoot and #2 by your customer's expectation that the price will be lower.

Good lessons to learn for next time :)

This guy wants a poor resolution 300 foot distant view from 400
feet in very poor quality to prove that his business can't be seen
in time to stop, so that he can get a permit to post a sign?
According to the paperwork he has to fill out, all they require is
a poloriod snapshot.
Where does ethics and bare honesty come into this?
Apparently, it doesn't.
Not for him, apparently - but what about you? You're
discussing entering into an arrangment with him where
you know he'll dishonestly use your work. That makes
you a co-conspirator - doesn't it?

No, not really. The more I think about this, the more it makes sense to me. The 300 foot mark will end up at the bottom of the frame. If I have to step back a few feet to accomplish that, I don’t think there is a problem with that. It ends up being a photo with a FOV of 300 feet from his business.

Not that I was impatient, more like I had the time, the weather was beautiful, and traffic was almost non existent, making it easy to step out into the street to take the shots. I didn’t foresee what it was going to develop into....Ok, maybe a little impatient
& 2) You made some low
resolution prints, again out of impatience it would seem.
Well, making the low resolution prints was no skin off my back, and seemed like a good idea to find out if I was getting what he wanted, and an excuse to shoot something in great weather. It did not take me from doing something else.

Having to reshoot is also no big deal, since I’m at that spot 2 to 4 times a day anyway. The customer's expectation that the price will be lower because the prints will be low resolution B&W is the only part of this that may be unpleasant. I didn’t see that coming. I was shooting with the intent to print 8 x 10 sharp images in color. I shot RAW even! I would never have anticipated the customer wanting poor resolution B&W. Anyone here ever had that kind of request before?

ethics? Honestly?

PLEASE, get real.

Ever seen an ADVERTISING image of a super-model? Every Blemish has been removed. Arms have been slenderized, teeth perfected. Ethical? Honest?

Ever seen an advertisement of a 14 year old girl in the fashion-of-the-day in a sexually suggestive pose? Ethical? Honest? is she "really" 18 or barely out of Junior High?

The purpose of this image is to show 300 feet from the bottom of the frame. The first image did not.......

If you are worried about ethics and honesty, stay out of the realm of zoning hearings and look to the popular culture images around you.......

Just charge him the original $60 (or whatever is was), then let him chose whatever size prints he wants. Tell him you charge for your time. 60 bucks is really no money to speak of for a photo assignment. It shouldn't even be an issue.

:) you guys just lost 90% of the country.
not to mention the rest of the world (as if the election didn't do
that already).

but, all in, i'd be a happier man if they'd start delivering animal

don't wait for technology -- it won't wait for you
Small, family owned business, and according to the book "Fast Food Nation", the healthiest of all the fast food chains on the planet. The daughter inheriting it all will likely screw up the company by taking it nationwide. The one by LAX is probably the first stop for anyone in the know.

I've had the fries animal style. Wow, what a heart attack in a boat!

Haven't read that book, but know many who have...Now I don't feel 'quite' as bad for eating there. ;-)

Ya, the fries are something you can only do every great once in a while. :-)

Actually, I think he's trying to get off cheap by going for the low
resolution B&W photos, and expects to pay less. I haven't been
back or re-done the shots yet. I'm sure he will take the approach
that crummy resolution B&W photos should cost less. I just wonder
how he will react to the fact that it doesn't change the amount of
my time producing those crummy photos.
Well that's possible. But it makes me wonder why he asked you to do it in the first place.

Let us know what happens...
