What is banding

My 7D exhibits noise bands across the frame at high ISOs and dark environment exposures. I am not sure if this is a problem with mine or common. Try taking an underexposed shot, say in a dark room or outside at dusk at 1600 ISO and then adjust levels up in Photoshop. Broad areas are very noticable.

Would appreciate hearing about any others with similar problem, still scared to send my baby away for fixin'.

Yes, but does it appear on images that are properly exposed and not altered via post processing in PS? The thing is, you can reproduce banding on basically all digital cameras if you want to, but it only becomes a problem worthy of sending the camera for repair if it appears under different circumstances and is visible on most images - this I've heard happended to some of the early Canon 20Ds due to some interference on the circuit board, but I've never heard of the 7D from suffering form such a thing. From your example I think there's no need to have your baby fixed
