What does 'Open Talk' mean?

Why not add digitial to every forum to erase all confusion? The problem is that people don't think, its funny that they think any forum on a digital photography site could be about anything but digital photography. :)
No, it's for the discussion of anything RELATED TO DIGITAL
PHOTOGRAPHY which doesn't fit into the other forums.

It is NOT for discussion of relgion etc.. There are PLENTY of other
places on the net for that. I will soon (and have just) purge any
such messages, they do not have a place here.
I believe the best thing to do is rename the Forum to Open DIGITAL
talk.
That way it should eliminate things like this happening again. Open
Talk can be interpreted too many ways.

But there are so many sites out there that have an 'Open' or 'Off topic' forum. New visitors to the site (Such as myself) may mistakenly assume that this forum is like that.

I just feel that the easiest way to stop these religious and political discussions popping up again is to change one word, to make it clear to people that this isn't the right forum to post in.

What about the possibility of another Forum "Unrelated DP Issues" ?
Would it use up too much bandwith? Easy to Implement?

It would grab all the off-topic stuff and you still abide by the usuall etiquette rules. If it turns into a b* ch-fight, then you delete it for good.

There are many people who do "live here" (not me) and it could help with providing them a "virtual-home". Kinda a "virtual shelter" :-)

I hope that certain individuals add the URL of Phil's message to their 'Favourites' list to act as a constant reminder!
Open Talk about photography? That seems to be redundant in light of
all the photographic related forums here.
I always assumed it was for talking about whatever was on your
mind, within the parameters set by the administrator.

Mmmm seems to me the reason people come here in the first place is either find out what digital camera to buy/upgrade to, or just to learn/ or be educated or to improve their imaging skills....some of us come here to give advise & some of us to take advise.

However there are times that we have a difference of opinion regarding a subject related to E.G. mac vs pc or Canon vs Nikon or Film vs Digital...Epson printers vs Canon printers these are the subjects that belong in Open Talk any others have their catagories.

Racial & Religious subject do not belong here ...neither does telling one that their language skills are no good or they just do not how to spell.....we are here because we love photography & thing related to photography ..that's all we should then talk about.

I never have understood why someone would want a thread killed,
other than Phil Askey. No one else has any stake in it at all.
We all know, especially the abusers, that Phil does not have the time to police this worldwide site. ...and yes, you are correct that if I don't like the thread, just don't read it. I just find it rude and truly abusive to the others in this site and a waste of space. But that is just my opinion and it is not my business how the site is managed. It's just a peeve of mine.

I have no opinion either way regarding the post itself.

I'll stumble off my soapbox and crawl back in my hole now.

Why don't the people that want to discuss politics and religon
just go out on to Usenet and look for the appropriate forums
there ?

If you don't have access to a Usenet newserver, just go via
groups.google.com, or some other place like that.

I think some people may feel more comfortable discussing this with people they know or people that they feel share a common interest with them. That may be why they discuss those innapropreate (sp?) things here. Or they could just be lazy... :-)
