Trouble with D50

There's a difference between "flare" and "ghosts". Flare (I think
the correct term is "veiling flare") doesn't "show" per se. It
shows as a severe lack of contrast, flat-looking images.

Googled up "veiling flare" and found a number of discussions. Seems to me that veiling flare and over exposure would be hard to differentiate.

Learn something new every day. Thanks.

Only in theory :) Get a Tokina 28-70 ATX 2.6-2.8. Shoot in very bright daylight. Put a cheap filter on it (just to make it even more fun!). Try to get a properly exposed shot with some contrast. Delete the resulting [lousy] shots. Now you know what "veiling flare" looks like :))

Seriously though, the way to diffenetiate them is when you get a great result with X-shutter-speed-Y-aperture with one lens and get a crappy shot (total lack of contrast) with the same X-Y with another lens, but only on the days with lots of "stray" light - that's flare.
