Trimoon Tutorial Here

I thought I had this Impressionist Filter thingy whipped when I
pulled out my old copy of Frontpage 2000. The MI disc had an
Impressionist filter, so I copied the files to the plug ins of PS
CS. Unfortunately, this filter has a Factory Default Folder, but
no User Settings folder. Try as I might, I could not get this
thing to work with the CTP.set. The default charcoal filter seemed
to work OK, but I want to add stuff. Speaking of Stuff, the
Impressionist filter is in the Stuff folder on the FP 2000 disc 2.

Any thoughts or suggestions?
Dennis,

First do you have the other folders - brushes, papers, etc. and the other files - mscreate.dir for one. If so, you should be able to just create a 'user settings' folder - put it at the same level as 'factory settings', 'brushes', 'paper' and restart photoshop. If this doesn't work, make sure you only have one "impressionist 8br" file in the adobe path - having 2 will stop the directories from loading. See Cheryl H's screen shot in the above post "visual aid....". If you try that and still no joy, try this - rename mscreate.dir by putting a tilde in front, and open up ps and attempt to run the filter - I think that you'll get a new mscreate.dir file that 'sees' the user setting folder. If none of this helps email me, because if you got everything it will work if set up correctly.

Ahh! Bless you, Kent. I let that "image" thing sail (yuk-yuk) right past me. I know the look I've been playing with is not at all what Steve had in mine, but it's fun. Here is another in my "transportation" series. The first is mine, the second is a Monet, a true early railfan.
Warm regards, Bill

This is really beautiful! A couple of questions: What size image
are the settings of the Impressionist filter and the brush tool
presets optimized for? Do you vary these settings, such as brush
size, during the process? And your tutorial shows the word
"modified" in the filter name, whereas miine does not. Did I
download the wrong thing?
Good question. I wondered the same thing. I think one thing Steve
may have changed (and as soon as you change anything on a style it
goes to 'modified')... is and he mentions this in the tut - that he
used 'image' as background rather than the brown that is defaulted
on that style. In fact, I supposed that's what you used on your
excellent sample as it had a darker look, but I 'got' that :-) -
the darkened canal looked good and remeniscent of some early
impressionist stuff by manet - who was more 'connected' to the
salon types than monet, renoir, etc. and hence had that 'burnt
sienna' background typical of the pre-impressionists. I should do
more of that for variety :-) where 'black' was part of the palette
as well. Some very early VanGogh also portrays this look.

As for the brushes - I used the 332 defaulted at 72 and left it
there, and used it on the 'erase' part as well, but would be
interested in Steve's comments.

At long last, after reaching the deepest pits of hell, I finally
have it posted. It's not what I had originally envisioned, but
those files are long gone. My computer fought me tooth and nail.
I lost a lot of images and data at the end, but I am a better man
for it. I hope you enjoy this. I am posting it in my PBase
Gallery because it is the easiest. I still have a lot of work to
get caught up on, but the important stuff is gone and I decided to
devote today to getting this tutorial posted as I promised. I am
very sorry it took so long, and I really appreciate your patience.
Some of you who have e-mailed me to console me during my trials
know what it’s like. Anyway, without further ado, here it is.

Out of school, bite the bullet and tried this, a very feeble attempt.

A question I have, on page 15 where it states paint with the preset mode set to color dodge, is this the layer mode or the brush mode and do you sample the color from the pic or use the defs of bl/wh?

Although my impressionist plug in works and i have used it a little, I do not seem to be able to access the set files, that is, if I go to say chalk there is no set file to access. My saviour Kent is helping me figure this out, just thought i would an attempt.

It really looks like the one that was on Little House on the Prairie but without the bell over the door. I love little churches and I have been trying to find the tiniest church in the world located in Canada over in Brittish Columbia. I was there once and took a picture and am frantically trying to find the picture as well as where it is located in Canada.

Thanks to Kent I was able to straighten out the problems and get it all in the right place and working.
Here is another quick one, not that great but I am on the way.

I seem to have hit a brick wall. I have read what to do with the downloaded files several times and can't quite get it right. In which cs directories do you place the respective files. I have downloaded all the files just at a loss what to do next.

You were to kind Trimoon, my first 2 were hardly frame material but the third time is a charm, finally fot the feel for it. Yjank you so much for sharing this technique, to much fun !

Same here I have tried everything, I can't find the folders, I have Xp and PSCS, got the brushes ok...
I am having similar problems with CTP.set. I tried downloading it
in Netscape & IExplorer and in both cases, I end up with a file
type of File Set for Microsoft Backup in my PS 6.0 Plug-in
Impressionist Accessories User Settings folder. If I try to open
it, MS Backup is initiated. I can download everything else.
Help...Harvey
