Hi all,

Without noticing, I recently found myself liking shots from a compact camera more and more on social media. Make no mistake: I'm a diehard Sigma shooter, with nearly every model from SD9 up to sd Quattro H, and nearly all DP models, except dp1Q and dp3Q. I have fifteen SA-mount Sigma lenses most of which are in regular use. I have given up my Nikon D700 and Leica M8 and been shooting only with Sigma since 2016. I'm here to stay...

But these vagabond shoes are longing to stray, as old Blue Eyes once sang and I am seriously contemplating the purchase of a Ricoh GR III HFD. I would love to hear if anyone had this itch, because well, we Sigma-users understand each other.

It pains me to admit this:
But I had the itch and eventually bought a GR III and have used it more than my Foveon cameras; I carry it everywhere. I liked it so much that I additionally purchased the GR IIIx with the telephoto adapter for portraits (both pre-HFD versions).

I feel more excited about a GR IV release over the next Foveon (probably ;-))

Nothing is perfect, I guess, but overall, the Ricoh is more aligned with my 'photography style'. The size and faster focus (even though it's considered relatively slow).
I am less bothered about pixel peeping/sharpness these days, and I prefer the 'smoother analogue look and feel'.

I use a few recipes within the Ricohs that mimic films, which further enhances the look I like.

There's still something magical about the colour shifts that happen in some Foveon images—exactly what or how to get it is something I cannot explain. I guess it all depends on the science, subject, colours, lighting, etc.

If I had a genie, I'd wish for GR with a Foveon sensor (+ a tilting screen).

I stand enlightened and, supported. Thank you Bee Bee. I experimented with different WB tweaks in the Quattro series, like Teal & Orange mode. I was unimpressed. I always use the detail slider in SPP at the leftmost position.

With the Ricoh, I plan to use the ooc jpg's as well to see the effects of various film simulations. I know, I'll consider the Sigma cameras as my main arsenal, but I believe GR is well-suited for street photography. I once used a GRD II and was impressed.

I look forward to play with this little wonder that also got you hooked.

Hi Osman,

Although lots of folks swear by the Ricoh GR III as a great walk around camera, I have never used one. I went down the Fujifilm passage instead.

I find the X-E3 to be just about perfect for this kind of work - even though it's not a fixed lens camera - you can happily bolt on a very compact and light weight 27mm f2.8 or 16mm f2.8 WA lens, or use any of the wide range of 3rd party M42s (with an adapter).

Fuji has some excellent film simulations - if you want to shoot jpeg only.

Here's a couple of examples:

Yes, I mainly bought it for street photography. :)

There's an app you can get that is a great start-off point for the film simulations:

I honestly think you will really enjoy using the camera.

Otumay,

Like you I am a Sigma user all the way from the SD9 up to the sd Quattro H and would never be without them. They are what I use 90% of the time. However I also use Sony for some things, I can use my SA lenses on them. For another reason I have a Nikon Z5, used very occasionally. While the Sony & Nikon are very good indeed there is nothing to compare to the "richness" of the Foveon image files.

So if you feel like getting yourself the Richoh GR iii go ahead and enjoy the different experience. We only live once. Happy Festive season and New Year.

And we only die twice, quoted from the 007!

I believe there are standalone color emulation packs that you can get for Adobe and other software tools for post.

Some of these can produce similar results to the Ricoh GR color profiles and to the Fuji color effects.

Yes, I have some Fuji's loaded into my RawTherapee. They can be applied to any raw from any camera if it is supported, or any TIFF, JPEG etc.

I have a GRIII and it is very nice camera. Literally fits in a shirt pocket which makes it extremely handy to carry around. Great sensor, OIS and the lens has a very handy macro mode. The 21mm adapter is also really nice on it but makes it much bigger.

If you are going to shoot JPEG the Positive Film setting is great outdoors.

I have had one bit of an annoyance with both my GRIII and Theta X in that it doesn't always turn on due to the battery not always making good contact. They both do it with factory batteries. I put a small piece of self adhesive felt on the battery door and that fixed it.

Thank you kindly for the tips and motivation, Shawn. I hope to receive the camera today. Your sample shots are indeed very good.

This will be a most-welcome adventure for me since I bought the sdQH in 2016!

Becoming old as dirt, I knew it was time to say goodby to my M9 and M262 and get something a little more automated, I started with a Leica CL and its kit lens. Then I added a couple of Sigma lenses; the 24mm f3.5 and the 45mm f2.8. I really liked the results with those Sigma lenses, so I decided to replace the CL with an fp; easily coat pocketable with either lens. Now I've moved up to an fpL and added the 17mm f4, plus the 90mm f2.8 and have no intention of saying goodby to my fpL or those four small lenses.

I bought a Sigma FPL last week. So far I love the camera.

I have both the Ricoh III and the IIIX. I use the IIIX when I'm taking photos of people and the III for general travel. They are awesome cameras when you want to take a camera with you and not be bothered with camera equipment.

I have not tried video and either shoot JPEG or RAW and develop in the camera. I load the photos into my phone for emailing or texting to others.

I have not had problems/issues with dust on the sensor but I baby my Ricoh's because I have read about dust issues.

Interesting, I’ve never had this issue with either of my Ricohs.

I’ve added a filter adapter with a ‘clear’ filter screwed on. Makes it a little unpocketable, however I always carry it in a small bag with spare batteries, cleaner etc. so it’s not an issue for me. I’ve also additionally put black tape over all the microphones - I don’t use video.
So far, no issues with dust.

Greetings

I went through the process and decided on 1 Sigma FP instead of 2 or 3 other small cameras. A FP with a 45 is very small and FF and you can change if you want.

Good Luck
