Has anyone tried the Stroboframe "Camera Flip" flash bracket with the 10D and BG-ED3 grip? I'm looking to get a relatively inexpensive flash bracket (i.e. no Custom Brackets) to keep my 420EX above the lens in vertical and horizontal orientation, but it says it's best used on cameras "without large add-on accessory motor drives". Does this mean the camera won't fit in the bracket if I have the grip attached, or does it just make the lens off-centre when shooting vertically?

Your comments and/or suggestions for other bracket options would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Michael

I have the bracket and it won't fit my 1Ds (I think is probably the same as 10D with the grip). I now use it with the 10D w/o grip. Got myself a custom bracket for the 1Ds in a tune of $300.00!!!

I don't use the camera flip but do use the quick flip with the vertical grip on my 10D and it works extreamly well for weddings. I do have the bracket mounted so the handle is on the right side.

Thanks Paul. I was about to order that bracket until I noticed it's warning about accessory grips. I guess I'll have to find myself a different bracket if I want to keep using my BigEd.

Thanks Ben. Which model of the Quick Flip do you use? I took a peek on the B&H site and they list two models: the Quick Flip 120 for medium format cameras (looks like it has a cork mounting plate) and the Quick Flip 320 for 35mm cameras. The 320 says it doesn't work with cameras with accessory grips, so I'm assuming you're using the 120 or some other model.

Also, if I understand how these brackets work, it seems the Quick Flip models will have the flash aligned properly with the format of the camera (in vertical orientation, the flash head will be vertical too), whereas the camera flip will always keep the flash head horizontal. Seems to me that the Quick Flip would be a better choice, but I'm not sure about how they compare in terms of functionality.

I use it with my 10D and 420Ex and I love it. But I don't have Big Ed.

Thanks for the info.

Art:

I figured having the flash sideways would be better for flash coverage since it matches the vertical orientation of the film plane, but I'm a little concerned about flipping the flash a lot with only that small plastic shoe supporting it. Anyone have problems with the flash mount breaking in such situations?

Randy:

Is it easy to reverse the top part? I assume this is necessary in order to hold the big ed with the right hand and have the bracket grip on the left, otherwise the bracket grip would be on the right too?

Michael
on my D60, I had to reverse the top part, so that it flipped the
right way, for my D60 with big ed

Thanks Nikhil. Could you explain a little further about what you did to get it to work with the big ed? Did you have to drill a hole or anything, or is it designed to allow you to move the screw over easily? What do you mean by "to allow the flash cable to sit"? Is the flash centered right over the lens when the big ed is attached?

Michael
I have the camera flip and i use it with my 10d + big ed + 550ex
But what i had to do was move the screw over one place to allow the
flash cable to sit

Not the best looking, but they look practical. I don't have it so I
can't comment on them.

These are wonderful. They are built like a tank, are terrific for going from horizontal to vertical and should last my lifetime LOL. I also have a Strobo 120 ( I think --the one for medium format since I use a grip), but this one is so much better. However, it is not inexpensive and if you are not going to use it a lot and just want one for occasional use, the Strobo will work fine.

The major problem I had with the two stroboframes (medium format and 35mm version) was not with the BIGED grip on my D60, but the fact that the 550EX flash was so heavy that the flipping mechanimsm on that arm would not hold it where I wanted it all the time.

I sucked it up and bought the custom bracket with the stand and grip. I know you did not want to spend a lot of money, but after more than a year of frustration the Custom Bracket was the final answer.

The custom bracket is heavy, particularly when I have it rigged with dual 550EXs, but at least you can set it down on its built sand/base.

Good luck.

That looks like very nice bracket, and I like how it can be mounted to a tripod and still allow for quick switching from horizontal to vertical. The other brackets I'm looking at seem to be more oriented to only handheld opperation. Unfortunately the Newton is out of my price range at the moment. But maybe if I end up in wedding photography I'll invest in something like that. I'd be a little concerned that the vertical piece on the left in horizontal orientation would interfere with zoom rings though.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Dennis. I only have the 420EX right now which is a bit lighter so hopefully it won't be so bad for me. I'm just not sure how often I'll be using the bracket right now, so I don't want to spend a whole lot on it. Maybe later on when I get a 550EX I can get a Custom Bracket and use the Stroboframe and 420EX on the backup body.
