I may be having a senior moment, and I haven't used this camera in a couple of years, but..

Is there a setting that could affect this? In Aperture priority mode, I turn the control dial (back of camera, upper right dial as per manual) and the aperture doesn't change. Same with manual mode. In shutter priority, aperture does change with the lighting. What am I doing wrong? Is there an obscure setting causing this or is it malfunctioning? Thanks, Bill

Factory reset your camera and try it...

If you share a photo of camera screen with icons on, it could help to detect an issue.

What other dials do? At Sony, you can customize a lot, so it's possible that dials are reversed or even disabled in setting.

Does the lens have an aperture ring?
TO clarify. On my A7RIII - if I put a lens with an aperture ring on the camera set to anything other than the "automatic" setting then the camera behaves as follows (matching what you said):

In Aperture preferred mode ("A" on the dial): Lens is fixed to whatever the ring is set to. No option on the dials will budge it.

In Shutter preferred mode ("S" on the dial): Lens aperture floats as needed to balance exposure. Depending on ISO mode (auto/fixed) this is easier or harder to see happening.

In Manual mode ("M" on the dial): Lens aperture is fixed to whatever it is set to on the ring. Dials have zero effect.

In Program mode ("P" on the dial): Lens aperture floats to whatever the camera wants - ring position is ignored. Dials are the only control that works.

So this is why I am asking if the lens has an aperture ring - my Viltrox 16/1.8 lacks an aperture ring lock - unlike my 20-70/4. This has been annoying when I pick it up and the ring has slightly drifted to f22 rather than fully in automatic position. I have been frustrated more than once by this... .

Hi, I never even noticed the aperture ring on it! It’s a Sony FE 40mm F2.5 G. Thank you so much! I haven’t been very observant with that lens, I only rarely use it.

I’m very happy that helped you out. The first time I had the issue with my Viltrox I was confused for a few minutes. It’s easy to get lost in the complexity of the gear. I’m glad at times I just get into the image and forget the details of the gear.

thank you again so much! I couldn’t imagine it would need a repair with so little use!
