somewhat OT - Could somebody explain goodbye threads?

I don't know any of you. I suspect that I would like many of you and we could be friends. A few I wouldn't like. That's just life.

Since I don't have personal relationships with the members here, then why do you post goodbye to Olympus threads? Tell me why I should care enough about your reasons for going elsewhere to read your posts. Your reasons are personal. I may agree with some of them or disagree, but how does telling me why you are leaving make a difference to me?

As a gear forum, members share their purchasing criteria with one another, and how much they balance, measure, and assess each critical factor.

The goodbye message is the inverse of purchasing criteria.

Yes. It seems odd to create a profile specifically to state that you are changing systems. Who knew what you were using anyway?
 
Wouldn't you get more affirmation in a new forum when you say "Hi. I just bought a @@@@@@@@, and I love it" than in a forum where most of the members are probably staying?

If you need affirmation on your gear choice then you don't need to be in a photography forum. You need to be in a self help/psychiatry forum.

I suppose for some people it's a build up of frustration, sort of a goodbye with a raised middle finger, like breaking up with someone who started ignoring you a long time ago.

To you (personally) doesn't make a difference. But can make a difference for the OP to express that he feels more smart and decisive than all of those blind sheeps around? (I do not want to be too offensive, some people simply says it was good times but would like to move elsewhere)

I don't understand expressing sadness because of leaving - it is own decision and I expect that people are not making those decisions to be sad ... I don't understand expressing joy because of leaving either - in the moment of leave or shortly after that nobody can judge the change in complex with exception of enjoying (any) new toy to play.

There are always exceptions, as usual. I am really enjoying reading personal real-world experiences, evaluations or comparisons from open-minded, experienced and significant members. But there is just a few reports of this kind, probably as just a few members can evaluate yourself as open-minded, experienced and significant.

More simple said, I agree with you, each thread subject containing "hello", "goodbye", "jump", "ship" and similar words just scream to me "hey, do not click on me, you know this well already!

except the camera company isn't ignoring your needs. That isn't realistic. It's like expecting a polygamist male to satisfy all of the harem. It ain't gonna happen. :D

The company can't produce custom cameras. It puts outs out models that it hopes will attract a portion of the market knowing full well that not every person will be satisfied. Looking at an individual consumer level, then a person may like a camera model, but still find something lacking. If that camera ticks more boxes than not, then that individual is part of the market the company hopes to attract.

The problem isn't with the company. If with the selfish attitude of the person who expects the world to cater to him/her.

There are some on the forum I would miss having chats with. I almost feel like I know of the people here personally. But, like you, I do not understand creating a persona only to say goodbye?

Oh well. I'm just going to wait and see what the images from the E-5 look like, what the images from the K-? look like, and the D7000...and probably realize that until the State of Texas gives teachers a pay raise, I'll be keeping the E-500 a little longer!

Yeah that's how I see it. People just blowing off steam.

I can't imagine camera gear ever getting me that angry....well except when it's in my hands :)
 
I'm not knocking the goodbye threads where a person feels another system better fits their needs and cheerfully says goodbye. My OP is aimed at the ones who feel personally let down by a big corporation that doesn't cater to them (the ME generation).

It's one thing to say goodbye to (online) friends, and another to say goodbye with a one finger salute (two fingers if you're English ?).

People jumping ship most likely think it is already on fire, otherwise they wouldn't leave :)
 
... is when those who have until now barely or not at all participated, announce their departure. Do they expect to be missed? Or is announcing their farewell their only means of expressing disappointment? If it's the latter, it's akin to stepping into the middle of the street, raising your fist at the sky, and yelling something akin to what Chuck Heston yelled at the end of POTA. Online swan songs are almost always pathetic.
