Should make The use of Nikon Capture and all the Camera software run with ease.

Pentium 4 "D" 3.2 with 4 meg cache
Latest 975 chipset MB Gigabyte
2 Gig of Ballistix DDR2 Ram and sundry internals.

What happens.......... try to load anything with Nikon in it's name and it crashes. restarts, locks up. says its not a windows file and generally Don't work.

Everything else is a dream, my Photoediting my DVD recording and authoring everything BUT NIKON,,,,,,, anyone any idea why ???

Ta muchly

When you say it crashes, what exactly is the error details.

As its more likely a software problem, specifying the software details will be a bigger help than the hardware. What operating system, patches, additional software are you using?
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling?

I would choose a MAC.....cause there simply are not so many issuses with hardware and software errors!

AMD! No not really, just kidding. Are you serious about it cutting off in the middle and rebooting during install? How weird. Are you running Win XP or an older OS? I have never seen WXP crash and reboot during an install. I hope you can get this issue resolved and I wish you lots of luck.

I would look at driver issues. Some installs go looking for drives like your cardreaders, cd-drives etc. I have had a wierd problem with XP once where only de application accelerator from intel wasn't up2date.

Check all your drivers and hardware (there shouldn't be any questionmaks in the system hardware dialog)

CP990, CP4500 and comming up D70s or D200
currently breaking my head to make the decision

All of my Macs have recognized my digicams; two Canon Elphs, a Panasonic FZ5, Fuji 11, and my Nikon D50, as soon as they were plugged in to the computer. Never a problem.

It's Nikon Capture that is the biggest problem, I am well into the hundreds into the systems i have built as it is my sideline/hobby and build them to order as well as for myself so I am not behind the door when it comes to settling hardware issues, my XP Pro is up to date my drivers as you can imagine are up to date for the board and the sound and the graphics drivers are Nvidia latest.

Sorry to say i didn;t take note of the error messages i was so "peeved" off I wonder if it is with the Processor being dual core and not having hyper threading as everything else is just flying, I just converted two 775 meg Xvid files to DVD format in 1hr21 mins which is fast by any standard so the hardware is doing it's job.

I am going to have to give it another go,, nothing else to do but bite the bullet, just was wondering if anyone had similar problems with Capture, i do not want to loose the programme,,,,,,, i wil have to sort it the old fashioned way,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, pass me the hammer :)

Sounds like a driver problem.

Firstly make sure your operating system is totaly up todate.

Secondly I would have a look at the event viewer in windows to see if there is a clue as to why it crashed. Look for a red cross at that time and date.
(Go to control panel, administrative tools, event viewer).

Lastly have a look at control panel, system. hardware and then to the device manager. If some of the drivers are not properly installed should show up here.

Report back on what you find.

and Nikon Tech support has helped them.
I had this problem too.

They walked me through it.
I forget the specifics but it is working now and very fast too.

Get in touch with Nikon Techincal support and they can tell you what to do.
It is the Nikon Capture.
Instal Nikon View first and you will see that it works.
Nikon Capture is causing the crash, something with DEP files.

Would also run memtest program to make sure your memory is ok and also a prog to test the cpu maybe hot cpu tester. You may have done these already?

And everything else runs spot on, defrag,Winrar DVD conversion Photshop scanning and printing are all great so it has to be Capture, and i have something in the back of myu mind i saw on here before but it as yet won't come from out of the clouds...............

Weird in a way though as it worked fine on my other system, has to be something to do with the new technology or i have installed something it didn't agree with.

You wrote:

"Nikon in the name". Is this part of your naming convention for files produced using your Nikon camera? Why don't you just say NEFs and JPEGs from the D70? I appreciate you are p*ssed but why confuse the issue? :-(

Anyway, I was p*ssed my new AMD-based system crashed when trying to open NEFs in Capture. It turned out to be an anti-piracy validation that was going screwy (Pace Anti-Piracy's Interlok system).

Look at:

http://www.paceap.com/ and download TPKD.zip for your Windoze machine. Nikon apparently subscribes to their services.

There's a different file for Mac users so apparently they're not immune either. Oh, and FWIW, it doesn't specify AMD or Intel! ;-)

I sincerely hope this helps. Either way, let me and the group know for the sake of posterity whether this does indeed help!

Sorry if it was confusing but i meant the actual software as in Nikon Capture, nothing to do with the files being renamed etc . As soon as the grandkids are asleep and settled i am going to give it another try, if nothing appertains then i shall try your suggestion,

I suspect that Sam is right. I've seen the same thing and it was DEP. I also don't remeber how we finally resolved it. You could do a search on "Nikon Capture DEP" or something similar. Of course, Nikon just announced Capture NX. As I understand it, it is a complete rewrite of the software. Hopefully, it will fix this sort of thing. Of course it is probably not discounted for upgrades as it is a completely new version ;-)

Good luck with the search.

The DEP is the problem, but on earlier versions. I downloaded the 4.4 trial and it installed and worked fine, once i tried to install from earlier versions and upgrade then it became a problem again.

So,,,,,,,,,, how long till the new Capture is released ????

I was going to ask about the version and say to download the newest as Nikon fixed the bad code in NC that caused the problem. This was just an example of real bad programing as DEP just enforces what a good programer should be doing anyway. The 4.4 trial is full version and if you were licensed for another version of NC 4.x you should be good to go I believe. I think you can just enter your original license number from your CD case or what have you into the appopriate text boxes.

Actually DEP does more than just enforce what a programmer should be doing anyway but in this case bad programming was the issue.
