Shutter life

Circumstances push my camera purchase off until the end of May, but I'm doing all the research and reading I can in the meantime, in addition to going to stores and handling cameras. I was talking to a friend who has a couple of DSLRs and he suggests I find out what the shutter lives are for the 40D and the 450D. He expects the 40D to last several times longer.

OTOH, he also said his XT has taken over 4000 shots so far, and he's not sure when it will give out.

Just curious, are there any numbers on the shutter life for other Rebels and the 40D? I suppose we'd just have to guess on the 450D, unless this is something Canon gives out.

I think 400d was rated for 50,000 and 40d for 100,000, but it's from top of my head so I could be wrong and others will correct me. I read a story that Canon replaced shutter for free after a guy send it for check up before the one year warranty expired and the shutter got 50k clicks, even if the camera was still working good. In normal shooting conditions it is hard to reach 50k-100k clicks and when you do, it will probably be a good time to get something newer. On the other hand there is no guarantee, some people had failure before getting 5k shots and some brag about way more than 50k. You could probably replace shutter on 450D once for the price difference between it and 40D, but I would look for the better reason to choose the camera than shutter rated life, you won't take many pictures if you hate the camera for one reason or another.

Not sure about the 450, but I have a 350XT with over 22,000 shots and still going... It's older tech so I would expect the 450 to last longer. I believe both cameras are rated to 50,000 snaps.

Keep in mind this is just one guy’s experience here but since the XT came out I have had longer shutter life with my rebel cameras than I have with my XXD cameras. Based on my experience I expect the XSi to last longer than the 40D. I think this might have to do with the shutter/mirror mechanisms having less stress since they operate at lower FPS…

After I had taken more than 1000 pictures with my new 450D in less than 10 days I got a little concerned about shutter life. I didn't expect to receive an actual figure for the shutter life from Canon, but thought it couldn't hurt to ask. Well, this was the (translated) reply from the Dutch Canon tech support team:

"The shutter life expectancy of your 450D is about 300,000 times"

I am not going to ask whether they made a typo here....

Not so sure about that "It's older tech so I would expect the 450 to last longer". Today consumer products must be cheap and have a short lifetime, so customers will upgrade every year ...

That sounds a little bit high. 1Ds mk3, $8000 Canon's pro camera has 300,000 shutter life rating and 1Ds mk2 had 200,000. Even at 50k which was the usual rating of previous Rebels you would have to shoot 10,000 a year for 5 years to get the limit. Assuming you need to work and not as photographer that's about 200 pictures every weekend for 5 years. Of course you shoot more with brand new camera, I just took about 400 pics just to test it and learn it and I own it for about 2 weeks, I doubt I'll be doing much testing 2 months from now unless I get a new lens.

does not make any sense. 40D would be 100 000, on specs, and 450D,a beginner' cam 300 000. It's a 1000% technological breakthru from the 350D (maybe 400D too, not sure) that was said to have 30 000 actuations. IMO, if that was so, Canon would make a bigger promo noise about it, not wait til' someone calls them in Holland.

How come every damned Canon camera does have its actuations specs easily put out at press release, but you have to search so hard to find about the dig. rebels?

Did you ever see anything official from Canon on the XT? I know my XT lasted way past 100K clicks as did my XTi. The rebel cameras should have less stress on them since they don’t have to operate at as high of a speed so it seems reasonable to me that they would be able to last longer.

My XT is passed 150,000 click and it is now my backup camera..still working fine after nearly 3 years

If my 40D does "last several times longer" I expect it to last for 300,000 click at least

Just curious, are there any numbers on the shutter life for other

unless this is something Canon gives out.

My first thoughts were of Daniella. I remembered that she had a boat load of shots on hers well over a year ago. And as you can see she jumped in and provided first hand proof that Canon solved the shutter problems of the original Rebel. Very well it would appear. How many clicks do you have the the 300 Daniella?

I have over 20,000 on my XT. And if it would kick off I would not cry but praise it for the dedicated service it has given me, thank it for helping me to make a pittance (hobby) income and promptly upgrade. I'm thinking something like the 5D maybe, but my wife might be thinking a cheap P&S you can stick in your pocket and frame your shot from 3 feet in front of you. Goodby pittance................... Wah!

The d300 nikon has 150,000 - the d3 has 300,000- there'no way a rebel has the possibility of that many actuations . I believe he translated a magnitude off - 30 grand seems right . The 40d probably will do 100 grand though .

hmm, can't remember much. I know the shutter failed at over 100k of pic and I sent it for repair and once it came back with a brand new shutter, I sold it on ebay.

My backup camera is the XT, not the 300D.

20k on your XT is nothing. It can do much more than this.
