I know that LR has an option where you can tell it to store presets with the catalog, which I have enabled. But I have a few catalogs where I want to share presets that I use when importing. I know I can copy the preset file to each catalog and use it that way, but is there perhaps another way I can make it available to all catalogs on my system?

(The preset I use resets the profile to ADobe Neutral and ensures that all develop settings are zeroed out or reset to their defaults regardless of what settings the RAW file might have in it. I shoot Nikon and some of my early photographs from years ago had ADL turned on, and what this equates to sometimes is a +10 for shadows as it's built-in to the RAW file and that's how LR interprets it, but I like to start out from zero with my edits, so I essentially reset all sliders upon import to make sure of this.)

I'm pretty sure all my presets are available when I create a new travel catalogue. Just for general information I only use one master catalogue. When I get home I merge that travel catalogue into the master.

It has been a while so I created a new catalogue called test. I see my presets are still available. This is on the left side in the Develop Module.

I imported a file and was able to apply my preset which is Adobe Neutral and Auto. Ignore the DNG part. I just a dragged a random file into LrC and didn't notice it.

As you can see it was applied.

I then imported another file with presets selected to None. As you can see it is Adobe Color and nothing was applied. This is an R5II test file I downloaded from DPreview.

I shoot with Canon and I have never see what you speak of. Are you sure you aren't somehow applying a preset at import?

Sometimes re-setting preferences can solve an odd problem.

Also by any chance are your presets hidden some of your catalogues? In the presets dialogue box select the + and manage presets.

Thanks, these methods I'm aware of, but it does require me to copy the preset to each catalog (as I like to set the preset I am referring to in the Preferences for LR, but it seems that because I have it set to store presets with the particular catalog, if I open another catalog that preset may be the defaults for importing RAWs).

Although this does have me wonder if there is a placew here the default presets (that are created when the catalog is created) are stored and if I can put a preset into that, so when I create subsequent catalogs, it also populates the preset.

Otherwise I can continue to do it the way I have been where I just copy it to each catalog (I only have 3-4 catalogs so it's not a huge deal but I had considered creating some additional presets to use upon import -- which they are mainly to ensure that all develop settings are reset, or set to a particular setting for all RAW files coming into LRC).

I'm not an expert. I do know that several years ago Adobe changed the presets from lr.template to XMP so they could be shared with every app like ACR for one example. Beyond I don't much else. It just works for me.

OK thanks. I'm thinking for my case, it may just be easier to copy them to each catalog at this point (since I only have 3-4 catalogs anyway). I'll just create them all in one and copy them to the others.

I've only had to copy them when I wanted them on a different computer. Yes 3-4 isn't bad for what you are doing.

Yes it's mainly a master (working) catalog, an archive catalog (photos I am done editing and/or that are older that i don't need regularly), a client catalog, and a travel catalog (for when i travel) so not too bad.

EDIT: I did figure this out for the most part actually just playing around. And I'll put it here for anyone who might find this thread in a search. I'm using a Windows system so the paths I provide will be for Windows Oses, but I imagine the same process works on Mac.

1.) close LR Classic if it's already running

2.) Find the Preset file you'd like to have "installed" by default when you create a catalog.

3.) Navigate to the default presets folder, so on a Windows PC this would be:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Lightroom Classic\Resources\Settings\Adobe\Presets

4.) I would create a folder for your presets (if you used a group name, make a folder the same as the group name, although I don't know if this is necessary or not.

5.) Inside the folder you just created, past your preset file(s).

6.) Restart Lightroom and create a new catalog. You might be able to see the presets in an existing catalog if you to go to Manage Presets and check. I didn't check. But new catalogs should now include your custom presets that you copied over.

Keep in mind this on a per-machine basis, meaning it's specific to the particular machine (but it should apply to all users since you're placing the preset files into the main program folder, not a user profile folder. So if you have multiple machines (like a desktop and laptop) then you'll have to repeat this on those as well.

Glad I found this so if I do create subsequent catalogs, all of my presets are there.

There is one caveat: Since these are now considered "default" presets you cannot update them. You'd have to go back to the catalog you created them with and modify them there and then re-copy them over to the path above.

But this is one way to get your custom presets installed for all new catalogs that you create on that machine from that point forward. And this is also a good way if you have some "utility" presets you want to use, like I have one that resets all sliders to 0 without actually wiping out all develop presets, it just resets all the sliders back to their defaults (but doesn't erase things like masks for example).
