i wanted to give everyone, who is interested in a split screen, information on how to order. the text below is from rachael who is making the screens:

Payments should be made to the PayPal account [email protected]. I’ll run a batch of whatever number we get when I return next Monday (June 6th). So let people know that if they want to be in on this batch, their order must be placed by Friday (June 3rd). After that, I’ll either run a batch each time we get to 4-5 orders or it might make sense to just run a batch every two weeks. HOW MUCH?

$200 US funds. includes domestic USA priority mail shipping. international orders will incur an additional shipping charge. consult with rachael.

IS IT REALLY AN IMPROVEMENT OVER A STOCK SCREEN?
for focus - yes, huge improvement to me...

IS IT BRIGHTER THAN THE STOCK SCREEN?

not at wide open. theoretically, it is brighter while using M42 lenses with aperture closed down. i have not had the opportunity to check this yet by comparing another camera with the same M42 lense.

IS INSTALLATION EASY?

apparently those with average mechanical skills will be able to install themselves. there will be detailed instructions with photos on how to install the screen.

CAN I HAVE SOMEONE INSTALL IT FOR ME?

rachael has the name of someone that will install it for you (at an additional charge), if you feel so inclined.

WILL IT VOID MY WARRANTY?
check with your local Sigma distributer.

WILL IT WORK IN AN SD9?

yes, but check with mike gerstner on metering challenges with the SD9. he has one installed in his SD9 and will be installing it in his SD10. (he would be good to question about the installation process as well).

I just wanted to follow up on the cost of international shipping.

USPS Global Priority Mail adds an additional $15USD to any of the countries they can ship to. This includes Canada, Germany, UK, Australia, Sweden, Switzerland, and many others. USPS Airmail Parcel Post will cover most other countries for the same additional $15USD.

Both of these services are economy air services that do not include any customs expediting. You will be notified by your customs bureau when the package arrives, if you are required to pay any duties or taxes before your order can be delivered. In addition, these services do not include much ability to track your package, nor do they guarantee a delivery time. However, they quote 4-6 days for most countries.

If you want FedEx or UPS, please email me for a quote at [email protected]. The cost is generally $70USD or more, which is why I don't usually use these services.

For the standard Global Priority or Airmail Parcel Post, just add the $15 charge to the total when you place your order through PayPal. Please be sure to include a complete accurate shipping address as well as your phone number.

I can of course do a search on split screen and try to find out that way. But I am too lazy. So here goes. What is a split screen and why would I want to have one (let alone pay for one )?

A Split screen was common in the good ol days of manual focus cameras. (If theses where good ol days )

In the center of the screen is a sort of prism, when a line is crossing this part it looks broken when the picture is unsharp and it looks intact when the picture is sharp. You need this for manual lenses or if you have a bad AF.

It could also be nice for Macro work, but as I know from my manual camera, when trying to use a bellows or something else to get real big magnification, the split screen is often becoming dark and will help you in no way.

Depends on the speed of the lens system, anything below f:5.6 will generally darken at least one half of the split screen. So bellows will mostly be a no-go.

It will, you just need to use a brighter light source when you are using high magnifications.

I have found that when using a small 12V 50W Halogen bulb sited fairly close to the subject the viewfinder is bright enough to allow easy focussing at 12x mag' (210mm + reversed 17mm), even without a split screen.

The very best thing would be a microprism around the split screen circle, like in alomst every SLR before autofocus. With new technology, you hardly get all the goodies of the old technology it replaces. Focusing in the good old days of manual focusing was never a problem, I have never got so many out of focus pics after I went digital with autofocus lenses. My SD9 might possibly be faulty, I don't know, but sometimes it wont focus at all and "hunts" endlessly.

also of note the hi-lux treatment allows focus aiding down to f5.6 before the circle becomes too dark.

i'll see if rachael has pictures of the screen that can be posted.

I do think that it will help when AF is a problem or when Battery life is more important but it’s not inexpensive either.

But from a different perspective, that cost is nothing in contrast to the joy that gives, the feeling of easy and accurate MF.

I think this is great.!!

I have allways believed the lack of a decent focussing screen was the biggest drawback of my SD10 and any other DSLR... I can´t imagine why the manufacturers want to make such crippled cameras,... a SLR without focussing screen is only half a camera....

I will certainly buy one as soon as possible...
