Picked up a nice clean working Contax RTS with a Carl Zeiss Planar T* 1.7 lens. It’s my first Contax and seems to be a very sturdy SLR. The only issue is there appears to be some dust and other matter when looking in the viewfinder. I have cleaned the mirror and the removable focus screen and brushed the bottom of the prism, which did not clear the debris. Is this worth sending in for cleaning?

It's entirely up to you .

A bit of muck on the mirror , focus screen or prism will not show up on the film .

If it's that bad it prevents you from focussing the the lens correctly, or it annoys you enough, then get it cleaned.

It's possible it's a scratch on the focus screen, rather than dirt , in which case a new screen would be needed.

Do you think that could be the issue ?

All that said , the cameras a good few years old and might benefit for a CLA anyway.

Myself I tend not to mess about with cameras untill there's an issue to fix .

Other people like to pay for a full service on the basis it'll prevent any future issues .

Although having things apart can sometimes disturb things and encourage parts to fail .

YMMV.

Leave it alone. It has no effect on the pictures. Wait to see if you have any significant problems. On a camera like the RTS there is no real "preventive maintenance". Wait till something breaks.

Could also be in the viewfinder but, as stated already , it will not affect your photos so don't let it bother you.
