With DXO releasing new versions of their software that includes R5 II support, I'm now evaluating Pure Raw, especially the Lightroom plugin. What I'm trying to understand now is how to get the settings of the processed file in Lightroom to be the way I want.

If PR makes lens corrections, LR should not. It seems like it defaults to applying them. So that could be my default LR settings. On the other hand, the color profile is definitely not my preferred color profile (Neutral). Other edit settings have adjustments, like shadow adjustments and other similar things in the develop module.

What settings are applied? Does it retain settings already applied to the photo I'm processing? Or is it using default settings set somewhere? If so, where do I set those? And can I set them separately for this sort of import vs. a normal import of raw files from the camera?

Annoyingly, things like keyword tags and star ratings are NOT retained. I would like these retained from the original image. Is there a way to set it up to do that? I don't mean syncing afterward. I know how to do that, but I shouldn't have to.

Scenario: I have Lightroom filtered to display images with a star rating of 4 stars and keywords containing "DXO". I select File, Export with Preset, Process with DXO PureRaw (one of the items). The image is processed and imported into a collection. Then the screen goes blank because I've filtered on 4 stars and "DXO" but the newly imported file has neither of those, and now it's not even displaying the source because it has switched to the collection.

I used PR2 for a while. Unless something has changed when you send a RAW file from to LrC to PR it does not carry over your LrC adjustments.

DXO and Adobe do not work together to coordinate things. LrC does not care if lens correction were applied elsewhere. You can create preset and apply it to turn LrC lens corrections off before or after sending it.

Which app for the colour profile? DXO or LrC?

DXO and Adobe do not work together. There was a recent question at the Lightroom Queen's site. When the poster sent a file to PR it came back to LrC as Process Version 1 instead of 6. This had nothing to do with Adobe. DXO had to correct that. This was a little off topic but just an example.

There may be more experienced users that might know more about this and your other concerns.

I just tried saving metadata to file in LR before exporting to the plugin. When importing the DXO-processed image back to LR, it had the settings applied. Seems that is the best solution so far, and I probably have to just live with the plugin adding the image to a collection and opening that collection. From there if I saved to the original folder, I can go to folder in catalog and see the other one next to it.

That's good. One thing I hated about DXO was the collection it created. When Adobe Denoise AI came out I couldn't get to deleting that fast enough.

A few things you should know and I'm not trying to deter you from DXO.

PureRaws (PR) annual upgrade cycle is from March to March. PhotoLabs (PL) cycle is Sept/Oct to Sept/Oct. PR4 was released in March with DeepPrime XD2. There were some complaints about false detail and artefacts. PL7 had DeepPrime XD and did not get an update until PL8 which now offers DeepPRIME XD2s. It is an improvement over DeepPrime XD2. I'll try to find a video for you.

The way DXOs business model works is PR will not likely not see DeepPRIME XD2s until PR5 in March of 2005.

DeepPRIME XD2 is a very good product. Some of those issues I mentioned can be controlled with the sliders. Just thought I'd point a few of these things out.

Also LrC 14 is a few weeks away. Curious to see if a few of the rumours pan out. Actual Canon Colours, not emulations and possibly a Sharpen AI module. We'll see if they did anything it Denoise AI as well.

That's almost 20 years ago. :)

The current version of PR is 4.4 and includes support for the R5 II, which was not available in March, so this seems to be a bit out of the cycle you mentioned. I'll be interested to see the video you referred to. False detail sounds like probably a softness correction setting that was too aggressive was selected. I'm likely to use it more for denoising than for sharpening/softness correction.

I know that PR4 has support for the R5II. I'm talking about the versions of DeepPrime.

This image is in this blog shows what I'm talking about. Currently PR4 only has DeepPrime XD2. Not XD2S. PR will mist likely not get it until March of 2025.

He has a video out as well which I'm trying to find.

I found it. I just wanted to let you know that PR4 does not offer the latest NR tech from DXO. It may not matter to you but you should at least beware of it.

Comparison at about 2:17

Good luck with your testing.

Just to summarize and the DXO users may have a different one.

PR4 was released in March and upgraded to DeepPrime XD2. PL7 was still using DeepPrime XD. Quite a few members including myself said you won't see DeepPrime XD2 until PL8. That was about 6 months later.

DXO upped the anti and introduced DeepPrime XD2s with PL8. I don't really expect PR to get it until March of 2025 but I could be wrong.

Just in case you get PR4 and then wonder why you have to pay for an upgrade 6 months later to get the latest tech.

I saw on a Peugeot forum that the XD2S has higher compression than the XD2. :)
