Exercises. Not deep knee bends or pushups, more like self-challenges. Go shoot a bunch of head shots of 20 different candid strangers. Don't let them see you shoot.

Shoot a string of things that are all square, centered in the shot. Make a list of arbitrary subjects that can be acquired where you are, then go out and capture them one at a time in the order you wrote. Disconnect the thing you had in mind from the actual image you found...

Stuff like that. Even if it is only geometry or architecture or birds or sidewalk cracks, it will pull your brain out of your head and start applying it to the subject. Pretty soon you will get bored with following orders and start finding fun OTHER things to shoot.

What do you do to get over it?
Buy an accessory, that always shakes things up for me. On ebay I recently snageed a wide angle VCL MHG07A for 77.00 new, and last night I got a Nikon 5T closeup attachment, 31.00, new. I'm enjoying the wide end converter very much, can't wait to try the 5T, I found some oxidized nails and a bottle cap on the roof of my building, and I'm gonna get in close on them...

Only? Grr... Geomatry and architecture are my favourite subjects! :)

So, if I'm getting photographers block when wanting to shoot them what would be the boring stuff to shoot? (j/k, I guess I get the point and plan to shoot stuff to get my self going...)

I'm in a major slump right now. The holidays did it to me. I got so busy that the only time I picked up my camera was for opening presents. When I took it to the relatives' parties everyone said,"oh geez, she brought her camera again..." Now THAT'S encouraging. Come on, it's what i DO.

I think the weather has a lot to do with it too. I'm an "outdoor" photographer, I love shooting flowers and birds and going for hikes with my camera. But going out when it's 8 degrees isn't very appealing.

I usually do what iNova suggested. Pick a subject and hone your skills on that. Dig around in the kitchen, there's tons to photograph there. Forks, spatulas, ice cream scoops. Food in the fridge and pantry. Tools in the garage. Try the water drop thing, that's very rewarding. Also, it helps to look back at past challenges, or even check out the other forums' challenges for suggestions.

Another thing that helps me: take your camera EVERYWHERE. Don't leave it sitting there because the more it sits, the less likely you are to pick it up.

And if that doesn't work, take John's advice. Buy a new toy. I just dropped $300 on a tripod, head, and close up filter. If that doesn't snap me out of it, I'm in BIG trouble!

Good luck!

Going through it right now. Went out yesterday to look for something inspiring. Was going to start working on macros but then real-life interrupted and I'm still in my shooting slump.

shaking fist at real life

First thing I'd do is check your local newspaper for an event. For instance, we have a car show in town this weekend. I'm not interested at all in browsing the cars, but what colors!! And spiderman will be there today!

Yesterday I took a "cold" walk at the local pond. Beautiful snow pics!

Believe me, once you start shooting you just can't stop!!

I like the idea of buying a new accessory. I do need some filters...hmmm...

The best thing to do is not to worry about it. Relax and get on with your life - your camera will still be there.

If you really need to "snap" out of it, I recommend looking at a book of great photographs (Ansel Adams always does the trick for me). Another secret is to go to an art exhibition - not photos, but paintings - you'll be surprised at what you can learn.

It's only happened to me once and, here's what I did to overcome it, worked for me anyway :-)

I took my camera out on a beautiful sunny day (gotta start off positive lol)..........

my excercise was to photograph the entire day, using nothing on the camera for assistance... no manual features whatsovever: all auto focus, auto white balance... you get the idea.

what this did......
forced me to see things a bit more creatively to come up with a shot
forced me to use my brain overtime to find that photographic object
forced me to be much more aware of the things around me
forced me to make every shot count

try it some time.... you might enjoy it ?

An assignment from the book "Photographing the World Around You" by Freeman Patterson:

Pick a spot (in your yard for instance; e.g. the author throws a hula hoop from his deck and stands wherever it lands) and shoot at least one roll of film/memory stick standing in that one spot. :)

Hi Eric,

Get it? All the time. In fact, I think I get it about every 3 months. I'm in my 4th round right now.

I've found the best way to get over it is to really force yourself to go out shooting. Try something that you normally don't do. My problem is that I'm just not on the "mood". I had this weekend to myself, and I should have been out shooting all weekend. But instead I'm sitting here watching some show on casting the IT Factor. GO OUTSIDE JIM! I hope I can get up for it later.... and it's quite amazing how just a few clicks of the shutter will get me back into it again. It's just getting out there that is the hard part.

So I'll make a deal with you Eric, I'll go shoot a stick if you go shoot a stick?

from the looks of the suggestions so far, mine won't be a popular answer. I'm in a bit of a funk right now myself, and when this happens, I go with it. I know that in time it will pass and I will once again be inspried. But in the meantime I browse through pbase galleries and the challenge galleries. Usually that turns things around for me, but like every other "mood" that comes and goes through each of us, I like to give it time to pass on it's own.

I'm attracted to them too in a major way, since they provide a rich ground of compositional opportunities. Perhaps I should have said, "...ever present..." or "...solely..."

hehe...it usually hits me when a challenge topic is proposed! Like when MFC said Perspectives, I just couldn't see any :( Except , of course, for those I already had.

I have to agree here; when it happens to me, I try getting involved in another of my (way too many) hobbies for a while. Also, I don't usually take the camera with me on business trips (for fear of theft, damage, one more thing to carry, etc), so I'm usually ready to go again when I get home.

Thanks for the advice. I was actually thinking of the all squares exercise. I will have to give that a try.

John,

I'd give this a try, but I just dropped 130.00 on a digital wallet, 50.00 on a monopod head so I'm a bit strapped for cash. I think my next purchase will be a TCON-14B tele lens when I am back in black. I really want more zoom.

Thanks for the thoughts,

Eric
