Official WSSA Application Thread

Ah, but do the “other” WSSAs have their own coin in production?

The Weed Science Society of America
Washington State Soccer Association
Western Social Science Association
Wine and Spirits Shippers Association
Washington State Snowmobile Association
International Winter School on Semantics and Applications
Watercolour Society of South Africa
White Sands Soaring Association
Whitchurch Stouffville Softball Association
Women's Studies Student Association
Wyoming State Shooting Association
White Shetland Sheepdog Association

and that was just on the first two pages of the search. I'd not
worry about being confused with the other WSSAs, there are too many
of them to bother with.

Yes, Please have another squirrel frenzy !! When we were in Rio last week, there were some monkeys playing in the trees above us (would have qualified as "squirrels" under the Australia Rules, I think :), but I only had my dinky old Canon Powershot 100 (2x zoom) with me since we'd been to the bowels of Rio to go shopping. I got a shot, but I sure wished I'd had my 5700 ! Please, I need more time !! There are lots of those "rodents with furry tails" here in Virginia.

Shot with a Canon P90 at 370 mm equivalent at my neighbors bird feeder.

I really like that one! Very nice!

An IMG file--was that a Canon shot? Which camera/lens? Don't
worry, the WSSA is open to all cameras and such--it's the pictures
that count.

Congratulations! You're WSSA Member #36

Yeah, I can do this for a couple of days a month, but I don't want it to become a full-time gig. Real jobs are no fun.

I am still trying to work around the background issue, and learning how to use the CP4500. I am having trouble getting the aperture (?) right, but here's the last try for this month. Hopefully you'll be willing to run this again in June so I'll have another month to practice!

OK, let's get the stress out of the way first: You're WSSA Member #38!

Now, down to business. How close were you? I'd guess that f/5 or so would be plenty unless you were really close. What shutter speed did you use? It looks like the light was nice, so maybe you were able to use 1/500th of a second or so, which should've been fine. The last thing, camera shake. If your settings were right, it was probably you that caused the blur. A couple of ways around it would be:

1. Use a tripod (you have to have a designated area for the squirrels to come and get the food).

and/or

2. Use Continuous High. That'll give you a few frames per shot--more chances to get it clear.

or

3. BSS-if the 4500 has it--I don't know. It's similar to continuous shooting mode, but it discards what the camera thinks are the "rejects".

Just some ideas. I don't mind the blurring background--it makes it look windy. The blurriness of the squirrel is a little troublesome. I do admire persistence, though. Keep at it.

LOL, thanks, Todd! I guess persistence pays off.

I used a tripod and I was about 2.5 -3 ft away. When they are at the feeder they are right on my porch. It's the only place where the stray cats won't bother them. I used Aperture Priority f/5.1, but I was in Digital zoom 1.8, which I think adds quite a bit more noise, and I had turned off Noise Reduction. ISO was on auto because I can't figure out what ISO 100 is on this camera. Yeah, I need to read the manual.

2. Use Continuous High. That'll give you a few frames per

I did try that, but for some reason, the successive frames came out almost black. I can save them, but there is alot of noise. Haven't put them through NoiseNinja yet. ( I use a Mac)
or

It does, but isn't available on certain settings. I'm not sure if I completely trust BSS. Sometimes, I swear it saves the wrong one.

Yes, it was windy... over 10mph, I think. I'll keep practicing. The blurring of the squirrels... I'll have to wait until they are not chewing. Besides, this exercise is great ammo for moving up to a better model camera ;-)

Thanks again for all your help!

Todd, Just wanted to give you a big THANKS! for all the Judging you did this month! As newly appointed member #37 I really appreciate all the time and effort you put in doing judging and giving your feedback!

Maybe next month we can get you some help from all 38 of us in the WSSA!

Well I hope all those squirrels can find some food until next month. I know they all got pretty fat eating up all of that I left on my deck.

Until next time,
Best Regards,

Mike
