New noise reduction filter

Dave

Thank you for providing the filter. I have tried it with Corel Photopaint 9 and its works fine. It appears to be superior to the bulit-in noise removal filter in Photopaint, but it does require a slight gaussian blur(0.5 pixels) to smooth it out a bit.

Tom S.
It runs under any version of Photoshop (including programs like
Paint Shop Pro) but must be run on a PC. To use it, just put it in
your Photoshop's "plugins" directory on your hard drive. You'll be
able to see it in the Filters menu the next time you start
Photoshop.

It seems to work pretty good in PSP7 on noisy images, especially if you use the Salt N' Pepper filter first set on 1,5 aggressive OFF, then you can set Denoiser to a lower setting, say 3 or 4. Seems to keep detail up better and noise just as low overall than just using Denoiser on it's own at a higher setting.
Oh geez... :-( I know I shouldn't post before I have finished my
first cup of coffee...

Thanks for the filter, Dave. I'll try it on some of my stuff in
PSP this weekend and let you know how it goes.

Maybe I should go back to bed first... :-)

Sorry but I can't figure out how to use this filter. How do you open it?

Hi all,

I've just finished my new noise reduction filter and I would like
to offer it to all my friends here on the forum... I'm including
the download link in this message along with the user/pass combo -
it will work for about 24 hours while you all download it. It was
very hard to try and find a good balance between reducing noise and
keeping details - how do you know if one black pixel somewhere is
noise or if it's really an important detail? Anyway, I think I've
got it down really well.

do you like this:

2mins work.

simply select different parts of the image and handle those differently.
Much more intelligent than any algorith could do.

most algorithms loose detail in the shadowpart of that mountain.
at least i think so..

Hello again everyone -

I'm glad to see that so many of you are finding it useful. I've taken the link offline for now (I only get so much bandwidth a month and so that's why I can only offer these high demand ones for free for only a limited time).

Anyway, based on all the great comments you all have given me I've started work (and am close to finishing) a much improved algorithm. I've gotten several ideas durring the refinement process and made use of the excellent Bilateral Filtering resource that aruzinsky pointed out. I hope to blend some aspects of that approach into the final product. All in all, I think everyone will be amazed (or at least say "oh, how nice") at the new version. In my trials it eliminated all noise from the sky in Mary's test image and kept a great deal of detail in the mountain itself (even more so than the Bilateral Filtering alone). Based on your desire to sacrifice time for quality it does run a little slower than the old version.

Anyway, I'll hopefully post a sample picture of Mary's mountainscape later today and then offer the new filter for download sometime Sunday.

Just thought I'd keep you all informed :)

John,

I first uses the magic wand (PS6) selected and blurred the sky. There wasn't much detail in the sky anyway so almost nothing was lost...I denoised the mountain part a bit, not to loose to much detail. There is stil noise in that part, but that noise doesn't MAKE the image look noisy.after blurring the mountain (not too much like i said) selective (magicwand or other selection method) sharpening can be used... I forgot if i used it here...

As promised, here is an example of the new noise reducer. It might not be until Monday that it get's released - I'm still putting several finishing touches on it...

Dave:

The link you supplied (below) is for an IR filter, not the noise filter.

Hello again,

As promised, the new and much improved version is now online. I
need to recoup some bandwidth expenses, so I'm only offering this
new version as a demo for free. It can be downloaded from here:

http://www.glickcreative.com/downloads/gc_ir_demo.8bf

If you like it, it's only ten bucks for the non demo version.

Again, please let me know what everyone thinks!
