Never use USM...

Never say never.

First, the statement is just plain wrong.

Usage determines what tool is correct.

Properly used USM is probably one of the most usefull and often used tools in PhotoShop.

When and how it should be used depends on whether or not you are reproducing images for the web, images for offset reproduction, inkjet prints, giclees, etc.

What may look oversharpened on your screen may reproduce perfectly in 4/c process.

Additional or alternate sharpening methods including masking, edge sharpening or FM actions all have there place in certain workflows.

Put another way. You have to know where your going before you can determine the best way to get there.
