Is there a workaround for those of us with Macs to shoot in RAW (NEF). Apple Photos does not yet support the Zfc. Anyone have any idea when this will happen.

You can use an exif editor to make programs think it’s a z50.

If Apple Photos will read Adobe DNG files, you can use the free Adobe DNG Converter to convert your NEFs to DNGs and go from there. A lot of folk use that method to read raws of new cameras into the old non-subscription Lightroom.

You might consider saving jpegs + nef. Macs probably will update the software ...sometime...

The jpegs would be ready to use now, and if you think your images are lacking you will have the raws someday to work with. If you capture jpegs set the profile to neutral and use maximum quality jpeg format. The profile matters while encoding the picture to the jpeg format, as it sets the transfer mapping of scene brightness to image intensities. Too contrasty of a profile can lead to blowing out highlights or shadows. But still, even with jpegs you have over 11 stops of dynamic range. You may find jpegs are usually extremely difficult to distinguish from raw images.

A photographer friend told me of a work around: Adobe's dng converter. I downloaded it and it works perfectly.

Perosnally, I would use the DNG Converter for Mac, which does support the Zfc. Use that for now to convert NEF to DNG, and then at some point, Apple will support the Zfc. Keep your NEFs (don't delete them) as it seems with past camera releases, Apple will eventually have support. And if you're using LR, you can later take those edits and transfer them or use them on the original NEFs (although I don't know if there would be any noticeable difference between applying those edits to a NEF or DNG).

The NX STudio option is an option, but not ideal, because TIFF is a bit more limited than using DNG. If you're not using Adobe software or software that can read ADobe DNG, then the TIFF format may be your best option but it's also an extra step in the workflow.

I have the same problems as you. NEF files from Z50 could not be read in Photos.

In addition, NEF files could also not be seen Finder where it could not be opened when you pressed the space key for quick view. Not even preview and thumbnails exists in Finder. It's really annoying that I could not quickly open and see the NEF files from the Z50.

Now I have a Z6II which also does not work in Finder and Photos. Apple is a serious problem here!

If you only want to use Photos and not Nikon's free software which is actually okay, you should convert them to DNG. Then you can open them in Photos and Finder.

Out of topic:
If you have the problem in Finder that I have and do not want to convert them to DNG but want to be able to see the NEF-file directly in Finder by pressing the space bar, you can do as I do: Install a small app / plugin that works perfectly. It's called: Raw Right Away (there are probably other apps if you Google it). Download it from Apple AppStore.

Once installed, you will not notice the app, only the image will open when you press the space bar as all other images do.
