You might consider saving jpegs + nef. Macs probably will update the software ...sometime...
The jpegs would be ready to use now, and if you think your images are lacking you will have the raws someday to work with. If you capture jpegs set the profile to neutral and use maximum quality jpeg format. The profile matters while encoding the picture to the jpeg format, as it sets the transfer mapping of scene brightness to image intensities. Too contrasty of a profile can lead to blowing out highlights or shadows. But still, even with jpegs you have over 11 stops of dynamic range. You may find jpegs are usually extremely difficult to distinguish from raw images.
