My first problem (hopefully just temporary)

Less magnification because the LT-55 is actually 1.45x not 1.7x correct? I think someone said that in here.....
As per Panny website, it is 1.7x.

I bought one, also the LW55 (0.7x) for my FZ30 in 2006.
Wow I need that owl here to catch mice outside. How do you catch quickly flying birds at that focal length and how do you know where they will be in advance in the first place and how do you focus on them so quickly before they move out of the frame-- and take a picture before they do lol?

I don't have this, but every teleconverter I have ever owned has underperformed its magnification spec:

Canon TC-DC58A (measured as 1.42x slightly less than the 1.5x spec.)

Sony VCL-DH1758 (measured as 1.50x less than the 1.7x spec.)

Sony VCL-DHG1758 (measured as 1.56x less than the 1.7x spec.)

The way I measure them is by taking pictures of the full moon with and without the teleconverter and then measuring the diameter of the moon in pixels in each.

Just a few issues with that , it’s not terrestrial, atmosphere and earth’s movements will alter the figures anyway. Remember it’s not an astronomical telescope.

that figure of 1.7 is probably for a given field of view at a given distance for the camera it was first made for.
so probably correct using the fz50 with a target at 1000m and full zoom .
Focus breathing at different distances and focal length will also alter that magnification ratio .

It’s just a rough guide .

It’s all about the zoom

To me the only useful one is the pre burst so I don’t have tons of images to scroll through .

I only used it on kingfisher images waiting for them to dive for food , so not used that often .
As a rule in a 1 shot 1 kill type of photographer using centre af point and AFS . It’s not for everybody but it works for me .

Wow this is nice! Was this with the FZ300? You didn't use i-zoom or anything else (no TC, etc?)

Can you get these kind of shots with your P950 too?
Yes this was taken with fz330 using lt-55 and izoom and it’s due to the low quality of this shot that I got the P950 which can also get these types of shots but with far better feather detail.
But you don't do BIF at 2000mm on the P950 do you, Paul? From what I've read, BIF should be done at 1200mm and below because of the speed of the bird flying. Unless this raptor was hovering in one spot looking for prey?
nope there’s no law says you can’t use whatever focal range you need .

I’ve done it at 3000mm on a P1000 and then cropped it as well as it was over some distant fields .

P1000 cropped the crap out of it as well

P1000 cropped the crap out of it as well
It must have been really high up for you to use all those things together, that's over 2000mm!
It is 2040 equivalent but actually has less magnification than the P950 at 2000mm

It’s called field craft 😂. I don’t over complicate my camera settings or have it machine gunning endless frames .

AFS or AFF , single frame , centre focal point . P mode on bright days and shutter priority on dull days and use the snap back button on the side

I cut my teeth in the 80’s using full manual film camera and 500mm lens .

Good points, Paul!. I remember Kim Letkeman's review of the Fuji S1 showed this issue with its stated 1200mm EFL also. He found that it actually had less magnification than the Fuji HS50. Imaging Resource found that it had the least magnification of the 1200mm EFL cameras they tested but it rated very highly in their superzoom roundup test-- second only to Nikon.

Funnily, in this magnification regard, the Nikon TC-17ED also comes out on top with the highest magnification ratio of any of the 1.7x teleconverters as per that TC site that is linked to often.

Are these the settings using the P950/P1000 or the FZ300 Paul? I don't think the FZ300 has a snap back button and I think AFF is only on the FZ300? Did you use AFF for BIF on the FZ300? I read somewhere that it has focusing issues so I changed that setting to AFS.
