** MC31: Multiples

Below, I've copied what Henk wrote in a reply when I was asking what people thought of the idea of trying out the new MC format:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1024&message=10664590

'I don't think it is necessary, IMHO the current format works fine. Setting up a PBase gallery will make it more formal and more difficult (I always find it a hassle to upload the images for the big challenges).

However, I won't stop sending in pics for the MC when you decide to use the new format...'

Nobody can argue that you haven't been true to your word Henk! LOL

Fred is making a late charge on the multiple entries category and is now up to 7, trailing Alain (on 8) by 1 and Henk (on 10) by 3.
G'day fellow guinea pigs and welcome to MC31: Multiples!

We're going to take part in a trial of a different format for MC31.
Entries for MC31 will be in the PBase gallery below where we will
easily be able to see them all at a glance. We won't have to
laboriously dig our way through lots of messages for an envious
look at what our fellow contributors are lining up against our own
masterpieces to ultimately win the attention of the Moderator ;o).
All you need to know about entering is in the gallery header.

http://www.pbase.com/mtf_foto_studies/km_mc31

Please try to keep this thread active to advertise MC31, maybe by
announcing your entries in messages in this thread. Don't be afraid
to create a message if the thread has been inactive for a number of
hours.

My aim is for this MC to still be pretty much as informal as
previous MCs, so you will see that the 'rules' are pretty much the
same except for where you post entries and comment if you feel so
inclined. The results will still be announced in a KMTF thread and
the winning entry will still end up in the MC HOF for posterity. I
think the gallery should stay populated for at least a few days
after the MC finishes for people to have a look and for links from
the results thread to work. The gallery could then be cleared of
images ready for a future MC. If this format continues, one way to
do that would be to have two MC galleries that would alternate for
each successive MC.

If you have any comments on this trial format, please share your
thoughts by putting a message in this thread, or you can e-mail me
direct if your choice of words might get you banned from dpreview!
;o)

Now let's get squeaking and have some fun (as guinea pigs do when
they're having fun)! :o)

Hi all,
I just posted two entries. Please be gentle in your comments (if
any). I took these pictures less than a week after I got my A1. I
had not learned how to use any of the settings except AUTO.....but
at least I knew to use a tripod and remote release when shooting at
Night....

And I just recently got PS CS, and don't know how to use it yet. I
would like to be able to reduce some of the "yellow" cast of the
lights.

Thanks for the gallery, John

KayD
Don't sweat it Kay. I'm throwing in my 38th pic with my Z1 and ZERO experience. Hope my little guys are cute enough to "overlook" all that. You're in the right place to pick up tips on PS.

G'day Kay,

Good work on leveling 168 chairs. It now looks even better. Don't worry about your other entry as it's pretty straight. I should have been more careful in pointing you towards just your chairs entry to start with. Thanks again for your participation. :o)
G'day Kay,

I won't be too harsh. I don't intend commenting on all the images,
but since you've brought it up, I'll make a quick observation here
for something that is easy to fix up. I cab get distracted when the
image isn't level, so don't be afraid to turn on the grid (ctril-')
and rotate your images to get your horizontal reference line
straight and level. Nice choice of subject captured well. Thanks
for entering! :o)
Thanks for the suggestion. I played around with the "168 chairs"
photo, and was able to level the flagpoles to vertical. It did
improve the overall look.

On the other picture, (murrah memorial), it looks to me like the
memorial is already straight, but the reflection from the pond is a
little off. Is that something you would normally try to correct,
or just leave as is?

Thanks,
KayD

G'day Dennis,

Off the wall maybe? Nice entry. Claudio's pantyhose aren't the only weird things going on in MC31. Thanks for making me smile. :o)

Hello all
Just uploaded 4 images with impressions from french village markets
All taken before I read all the clever words about Manual and Raw.

G'day Niamh. I really meant that your entry made me think of Tom's. I agree with you about how different they are, despite both being wet cobwebs. We don't get too many of those and I find it interesting to have 2 in a short period of time. Thanks for yours in MC31. :o)
I was aiming for a much less abstract, more natural, "cobwebby" look.

niamh
Another one from me - was feeling grouchy due to really horrible,
foggy day in the UK... until I spotted this cobweb with multiple
droplets.

Called it "drippy".

Your new format is obviously a success. I'm busy with work so I have not had much time to comment on the images this time, but it's great to be able too view all the entries this way....but I don't envy you your task when it comes to picking a winner.

Cheers!

Good luck picking winners here John! You ask for it, you got it! What I find very interesting is the "multiple" number of views. I guess you must have a good looking thumbnail to get those extra views... it's really interesting to look at those numbers and why a person would view one thumb over another. That could be a contest all on its own!

You're doing a great job at getting people interested in posting, that's all that counts. Many of these images you'd never see in a lifetime and I want to thank each poster for bringing your visions into my living room. Great format! Hope the winner carrys on the new "tradition".

However, I won't stop sending in pics for the MC when you decide to
use the new format...'

Nobody can argue that you haven't been true to your word Henk! LOL
I just posted some more pics (after I noticed Dennis also entered the sub-competition for the highest number of submissions). This also made me realize I will have to 'invest' some more into my new hobby: better home-studio lighting and a (homemade) remote-release.

G'day Henk. I'm replying before checking the galleries, but so far I'm intrigued about where your statement about lighting is coming from. Remote release and studio lighting ... hmmm .. self-portraits? I'll enjoy checking the gallery to see what's there, but will check messages first. Thanks again for taking part. :o)

BTW, it looks like I'll have plenty of counting to do later on! ;o)

G'day Fred,

I hope your working weekend wasn't too much of a drag. Thanks for your comment. I was hoping people would have fun with this one. I've hardly commented either, but that's part of the deal with MCs where they go fairly quickly, so you don't get nearly as much time as for the main Challenges, although there are usually a lot less entries too. Hopefully nobody will be offended at not getting comments. Hopefully it will be fun enough to see the results in the categories I have in mind to home in on the gold medallist at the end. :o)

BTW, the winner won't be easy, but of course this whole thing is very subjective because the winner is chosen by one person. I will probably need to keep in mind that there is no right or wrong choice as long as I can provide a reasonable reason for making the choices I do, which shouldn't be so hard. There are so many great entries that I really can't make a bad choice, unless of course that person doesn't realise he/she has won and MC32 never starts! LOL

Thanks for your contributions.

The guinea pigs category is wide open. Maybe it won't get used, or
maybe I'll have to do some lateral thinking to interpret entries as
being part of that theme! ;o)
Unfortunately I don't have Guinea pigs around the house. However, especially for you I made a group portrait of all furry animals in the house (including a Yak and a Kangaroo).

Thanks for your comments Tom. I'm glad the reaction has been positive and I would like to think that otherse will want to use the gallery too. I've tried to make the gallery header easy to maintain by just copying and making a few simple changes as each MC comes along, so hopefully that won't be too daunting or too much of a hassle for anyone. It's been good to see this thread pretty active at the same time.

I also agree that it's great to see such a variety of pics that may never surface at any other time. It's fun to see.

As for the thumbnails, from my experience, people look most at images that are wonderful in their own right and those where the thumbnail doesn't quite give enough detail for you to see the image properly, but it looks like the image will be interesting anway. Keep in mind that views from people logged in as K-M Users don't show up as hits anyway, so there's no way of knowing how many hits really occur.
Good luck picking winners here John! You ask for it, you got it!

G'day Henk. You're really pushing for this multiples title, aren't you? Good luck!

Thanks for the menagerie. That one on the left is uncannily lifelike and seems to be taking quite an interest in your yak, which, BTW, if I squint enough, almost looks like a guinea pig. ;o) If you hadn't told me it was a yak, I might have imagined it was a guinea pig. Perhaps they are somehow related. Who knows, the yyak factory might also do guinea pigs. ;o)
