Lumix G9 II: Focus transition Problems

I observe 2 problems using focus transition with the G9M2 for which I did not find an answer in the manual nor the forum:

1) When I use focus transition I miss always the first 0.3-0.5 seconds of the video, it seems as if the record of the video would start 0.4 s to late or the objective lens starts moving to early. Is that only me or do you also see that effect? This problem is most obvious for fast transition speed (e.g. H). Could you please check and tell me if this is a bug or what I do wrong?

One can put in a delay of 0 or 2 seconds before start but unfortunately not the needed delay of 0.5s. So it is difficult for me to time the right moment in scenes with some action – either I miss the first 10-20 pictures (0 sec delay) of the video or I miss the right timing because I need to click 1.6s (setting 2 sec delay -0.4s intrinsic delay) secs before action starts…

If someone from Panasonic reads here: In case this is a bug it could be repaired e.g. by putting 0.4 sec as option between 0 and 2 sec. – or an adjustable value in case this delay depends on objective lens type?

2) This second problem is caused by me but I could need help from Panasonic to get it solved: When I do focus transition with the PL100-400 on the G9M2 I hold the lens to better stabilize the camera. Often that results in a tiny change of zoom which deletes my focus transition settings (perhaps the zoom of the PL100-400 is not stiff enough anymore? LOL!!). So I have to set the limits again using the manual focus while action continues and I have to reframe using zoom and I am just screwing the things instead of taking video…

I kindly ask: Could you please stop the reset of the focus transition parameters when zoom is changed? That would help me a lot.

Best regards,

Jens

You could customize one of your SETs of focus settings. One of the settings is speed; another his how long it holds focus if something blocks the subject, and honestly I forget the third item. If you didn't even know you have various SETs of settings for focus, look it up in the manual.

Make sure this applies to video as well as stills. I believe it does.

One can set the position, the speed, the delay before the transition starts and also to which position it shall transition to. The 0.4s are missed at all speeds in case the delay is set to 0. If the delay ist set to 2s it is actually 1.6s. Of course this is all described in the manual. That video recording startes only 0.4 sec after the focus started moving I would consider a bug.

Do you also experience this effect or is it a problem only with my camera? Please check the video function "focus transition" - not to be confused with any autofocus thing.

Best regards,

Jens

Is there nobody with a G9M2 who could do the test to see, if the G9M2 has this bug or only my copy?

It is a matter of 1-2 minutes, please help me in case you have a G9M2 in your hands:

Could you please try the following test to help me? In video mode choose "focus transition" in the menu. When you set up focus transition please put position 1 on a thin thing (flower, sign, stick...) close to you and position 2 quite far away. Please set transition to position 2 and speed to H (high speed) and delay to 0. Move to position 1 to have the thin thing in focus. Press shutter button to record the focus transition clip. Please check, if the thin thing at postion 1 is in the clip or if you lost the first 0.4 seconds of the clip, too.

Best regards,

Jens

Hi Jens,

I don‘t understand your procedure.

You write once to set to position 2, than to set position 1. Do you want to record the transition from pos. 2 to 1? Are you missing the first or last 0.4 sec?

Regards,

Giuseppe

first you program (set) the positions (max 3). Then in the settings you set speed, delay and to which position it will move when you press the shutter.

Finaly you move to position 1 - still not recording, just to be there, where you want to start the clip. Then you press the shutter button and it automatically records while moving to the position 2. The problem is: The movement starts fast but the recording starts 0.4 sec later - thus I miss the first 0.4 sec in the clip...

It is really simple to see but I need so many words to explain it. But all is written also in the manual - just not the recording delay.

I tried that, but after I start the recording the transition changes only when I change to pos. 2 or 3 and press ok. If I understand right you start your recording and the transition changes automatically?

yes, of course. But the recording start to late in my camera

I am resignating - I will give back my camera in the shop since nobody can reproduce the problem.

Why don’t you just start the transition after 1 sec delay. Motion picture cameras were always started before ‘Action’ was called. 😀

lol - because the animals do not listen to me and because there is no precapture in video. Furthermore the min delay is 2sec - see start of the thread.
