Based on what I read elsewhere, I added doubleclick.net and googleanalytics.com to the list of restricted sites. Voila, the browser can browse DPReview again!

That is a thoughtful post. Thank you.

However, it would be more useful if you could tell us where the "restricted sites" list may be found in IE8. I have had a look around, but have not been successful.

Thank you again.

Hi! It seems to be in a similar place to IE7, i.e. "Tools> Internet Options> Security tab> Restricted sites> Sites button".
Yes. Same place.

Many Thanks!

You have dramatically improved my speed of access to DPReview, and my enjoyment of the site has been greatly boosted. Thanks again. :-) :-D :-) I REALLY appreciate it.

I was coming over here to complain that I was locking up at 60-70% CPU usage and freezing for many seconds at a time, and had figured on it being the banner ads. The Blockbuster one in particular seemed to be causing it most of the time. Then I saw your post, added these to the restricted list, and everything is absolutely flying again.

We're trying to get rid of the Blockbuster ad (it's coming from a third party network), so we'd ask you not to block any ads. Blocking googleanalytics will make no difference to you but will reduce our ability to continue to improve site features.

Hey Phil.

The Blockbuster Effect: When thousands and thousands of DPreview visitors started using AdBlockers because of this one lame ad.

What do you think??

I'd say that would be a disaster for the site, if I believed it was thousands.

The problem is, that it is not something that you could not notice, or ignore - as I initially tried to do.

It froze my PC in its tracks, and I had to kill the DPReview tab with the Task Manager to get the PC to respond at all.

So anyone who still wanted to access DPReview would have had no choice but to try one of the remedies - all of which, in one way or another, block ads. And now that users have blocked the ads, will they remove the blocks ? It's easier just to leave them in place !

If you use Firefox, you don't need to use an ad-blocker. Just disable the flash ad-on and you still get the ads but they are delivered without using flash. Of course when you go to a website that requires flash, you'll have to close the dpreview tab and re-enable flash to get that site working. Hopefully, they will fix this problem soon.

I'm willing to unblock the ad banners. I am OK with them in general - they help pay for the site and improvements and such - and we are part of the world that believes in capitalism and making a profit. I'll keep an eye on the news forum for when things are sorted for sure.

But I had to go with the restrictions because my computer's browser not only slowed down severely, but locked up entirely several times in a row, to where only End Process was able to get it shut down. I was literally unable to use the site without killing those ads.

Glad you finally decided to kill them yourself until a fix is in...but call me a bit gunshy - I'll wait until the first day or so you start them back up before I'm sure things are running OK and no new complaints have come in before I unrestrict those banners.

I think I'd rather pay money than have the site messed up as it has been, recently. Indeed, I did once make a donation when I realised I had been hanging around here quite a bit.

Admittedly, that one £10 payment across 6 years is not exactly "generous" by anyone's standards....

.... but it happens to be £10 more than I've spent with ANY of the advertisers, and that's a fact!

But we still have "The Flash", the blinding white page between pages with black backgrounds.

That is a problem with the way IE8 displays the pages, not a problem with just dpreview. Try using firefox.
