How do you use your 60D "C" mode?

Honestly, I have found the single vestigial custom mode to be so limiting as to be essentially useless. But since it's taking up space on my camera I'd like to know if anyone else has found a decent use for it that they'd be willing to share. Thanks in advance!

My default mode is Av with the centre AF point in One Shot, and my BIF mode is M with all AF points in AI Servo. So when I get somewhere, I switch to C, set up the exposure parameters for the conditions, then register those settings via a shortcut in My Menu, and switch back to Av. Now I'm ready for anything, including spontaneous BIFs.

Recently I used my C mode for a bracketed set up for a bunch of HDR shots.

Not the same camera of course, but the S95 also has one C mode. I recently took it scuba diving so I had Tv mode with auto white balance for topside, for photos underwater I had Av set for natural light for anything over 1 meter away and C mode set for macro plus flash.

There are plenty of uses.

I've set up "C" for my BIF settings. I normally shoot in Av but when a BIF comes along, I immediately switch to "C" - that way all my BIF parameters are already in place, like AF, Drive Speed, ISO, Ev compensation, etc., and all I need to do is track the bird and fire away. :-)

I have it set for high speed action, just in case something dynamic happens in front of me.

With my 50D, my other custom setting is for flash photography.

I have mine setup for black & white photography. I know a lot of people shoot raw and then convert to black and white but I like to shoot in black and white.

I have a 50D with C1 & C2.... and never use them either. Actually had to open the camera bag and look at the dial to see how many I had so it really isn't that big of a deal to me.

I have mine set for bracketing too.

Although the settings are so damn easy and fast to change with even one hand on the 60D that I never bother using the dial. I may have used it once.

My last camera had 3 custom settings and I never used those either.

I can only think that they are useful for people like journalists who would need to switch settings constantly on the fly, which is also why the video button on the 7D is great as it can turn on in any setting. Perfect camera for doing video and stills interwoven.

The consolidation of controls on the 60D really has eliminated any need for "quicker" ways to change settings. I can change stuff faster than it takes me to just move my left hand into position to hit a button or turn a dial.
It's very useful. I use it for Av bracketing + -2 with high speed continuous shots.

Birdman,

That sounds like a good use. Others have mentioned it as well to I guess I'm going to have to get into birdwatching!

I've tried using 'C' as my "shooting the kid" setting, but lighting and other conditions vary so much that it seemed too limiting (i.e. I have to tweak so many settings that I might as well stay on Av). Maybe it'll work better when she's old enough to play soccer or something where the conditions are semi-consistent and when I'm always looking to focus on the center mark.

There are many many many reasons to shoot RAW regardless of WB.

Who the heck even shoots JPG these days? I can't imagine messing with WB between shots. I do some professional work and have also taken over 15,000 shots on my 60D and not once ever touched WB.
I usually shoot RAW, but mainly because I don't trust myself to get the white balance and exposure correct in the camera.

I shoot in any and all modes but use C for landscapes and nature shots with WB adjustments like B2, G2 and landscape 4,2,2,0 and more. See page 99 in the instruction manual. Any setting you change can thus be recorded under "C" see page 262. I would like to have 3 C settings.

Since posting this message last year and taking into account your thoughtful advice, above, I have used "C" mostly for speed/action settings (I'm daddy to a 2-year-old). It is indeed useful and keeps me from having to muck with settings more than necessary. Don't you wish you had more C modes?! If so, please read on!

Do any of you use Magic Lantern? The reason I mention this is that I would very much like the folks at ML (Alex, I believe) to add the ability to re-map all of the useless SCENE modes in into additional "C" modes. Imagine the Action setting recording in RAW and employing all of YOUR settings. Same for Night, Portrait, and the others that are just taking up space on my half-useless dial. Since our camera's are really computers and the dial is essentially a switch this is quite feasible technically but it simply isn't a priority for the ML developers (as they are video-focused). Let's try to make it a priority!

If you agree, please petition ML to add Scene Mode Remapping as a feature! It might help to donate a couple of dollars to the cause (I did, since ML essentially gives me a new camera with cool new features every few months). Thanks for your help!
