I have recently purchased a Canon EOS R with a 24-105 lens. I use a Speedlite 270EX ll
I mainly shoot concerts in poorly lit venues (not big venues) with often dark or red light. In the music scene I am involved in, it's considered ok to shoot with flash, so I have been doing that. I rarely shoot big concerts, but it does happen sometimes, and I won't be using flash for those.
The reason I am using the Speedlite flash, is that I want to be as little volunerable as possible, given the fact that I am oftenm stading in the middle of a moving crowd taking pictures and I have destroyed flash units, getting slammed with my camera. I am open to using something different though.
My issue is the auto focus. It's sooooo slow - and the type of pictures i take are extremely high energy gigs with the band moving around a lot, pacing, jumping or audiences jumping off stage etc. Manual focus is not really an option if I wanna catch the madness going on. It frustrated me graetly and I can't seem to find a way to have faster focus. Sometimes the camera will just flat out "refuse" to focus even when the light is supposedly fine.
My previous camara was a Canon EOS 70D with a Tamron SP 17-50 F/2.8 lens and same flash unit. I felt that I was actually getting better results with this. Whuch only adds to the frustration of doing an "upgrade".
What am I doing wrong? And where can I "tweak" my setup to give me quicker focus when I'm out?
Attached are two pictures to show what kind of pictures I take.
