I am a devout Canon afficianado.

My current camera is the T2i, which I bought 2 years ago.

I specialize in Gigapixel photography and time-lapse video.

Two things that rely heavily on the amount of pixels.

I was aware that Sony had a 24MP camera for a while now..

But 36MP?!

I want to know - how is this possible that the D800 has TWICE the pixels of Canon's top-end cameras..

And when will Canon step up to bat?

Thanks.

Nikon is the latest to market with a new camera, that's how. Canon will announce a 48MP camera soon enough and some people will start to beg for a D800x.

So let me understand

You have Canon's lowest price 18 million pixel amateur camera and you are
lusting over Nikon's new D800? and asking why Canon don't have one yet?

Have I got this right?

If Canon did, would you wait for the entry level version of it?

Do u think Nikon will bring out a 550D body quality version of the D800?

If u need max Pixels and you are comparing Apples, why don't u own a 5d Mk2
then we may take your question more seriously

I heard from a reputable source that Sigma is actually working on a module camera with a 2 GP sensor that accept both Nikon and Canon lenses. If everything stays on schedule, it should become available to the public in very early April 2013.

Whenever they want.

100 MP sensors exist. The cost of manufacturing them is not very high (think of scaling up a cellphone sensor and you'll understand how easy it is to pack pixels onto silicon).

The bigger problem is processor speed. Aside from the Nikon 1 there's no camera - including the D4 and 1DX - which has an excess of processing power.

Canon, like Nikon, will give us the most pixels they can shift effectively. I doubt they'll release a camera any slower than the D800 this year in that space.

When Moore's law gives us faster chips and bigger memory cards we'll get more pixels.

Current rumors suggest they're going to be a 22MP with the 5D/X. If they split the line we might see two bodies, one optimized for video, the other for resolution.

I'd not be surprised if the video body did 4K. I'm also thinking Canon will now sell their 'last resort' option in order to stay competitive. They likely have a few options to pick from. One will clearly have capabilities the D800 doesn't.

Okay, either you're being incredibly biased because you feel bad for shelving out thousands for whatever camera you did buy.. or you're an idiot.

Yes, the T2i is the most affordable 18MP Crop-Sensor Canon have released.. but to call it "amateur" is about as ignorant as one can get on these forums.

I bought a 7D at first. I had it for.. about 5 months. Realizing it had absolutely NO ADVANTAGE over the T2i in terms of my field of photography (i.e. Gigapixels and time-lapse), I sold it and switched over to the T2i.

If I were to regret this move, yes, I would buy the 5D. I did not choose the T2i because it was so-called "cheap". I chose it because it has 99% the photo-quality of the 7D and 90% the photo quality of the 5D and costs 1/2 and 1/4 as much.

Now, if Canon rolls out a 9D and a 6D, both (let's say) 48MP, and all the 9D has are extra features I don't need, then sure, I will get the 6D and laugh in the face of anyone who thinks I am "amateurish."

You want to make yourself feel like a big man by buying the most expensive thing on the market? Go right ahead, Mr. idiot.

Hey Track,

Not in to bashing someone for their camera brand or model. It is all about photography. You use what works for you. If you met me on the street, we would be talking gear and technique.

But I am curious as to why you posted in this forum? Wouldn't you get better rumored info in the Canon forum?

For the work he is doing he wants maximum resolution and minimum features.

Fancy AF and functions are pointless.

A cheap Canon body with the same sensor tech as a more expensive body is perfectly logical.

Even if and when Canon launch a camera with 48mp or more, a used 5D2 would make a perfect next step upgrade.

Or, even better and if he wants to spend the money, a D800E with its lack of an AA filter would produce amazing resolution to rival a medium format camera.

We seem to be going through a phase where suddenly a whole new generation of camera models are being launched after several years of inactivity. It is good for all of us !

Wow, I don't want to insult anyone here, but..

One amazing post in the midst of almost completely unheplful ones..

Yes, that is EXACTLY what I want and need - a camera with little features and a high MP count/resolution!

You're the only one who understands this.. everyone else thinks I'm stupid for not getting the 5DM2.

And yeah... totally.. the reason I'm shocked is because there is suddenly something new and interesting (and how so!) after literally 3 years of no or minuscule upgrades - like the T3i being the same as T2i (what was that?!)

I also agree about getting a used 5DM2, but only because I have 5,000$+ in Canon lenses.. otherwise the Sony 24MP cameras are a better buy.

So, topstuff, do you see any conclusive rivals to the D800 in the future?

Not to be rude, but statements like that are always an bad start in a post. Collectors are very often brand afficianados. But people whi actually use cameras as tools, as means to an end ... Brand matters very little. Canon makes good camera. So does Nikon. And Sony, Pentax, Oly, Panasonic, Samsung ...

So, a 50% increase in pixels (over 24) in three years ... How is that surprising? Really? I'll say its a suprisingly slow development.
I want to know - how is this possible that the D800 has TWICE the pixels of Canon's top-end cameras..
Well, to be precise, it does not, 36 is not twice of 21 ;)
And when will Canon step up to bat?
When will it rain the next time where I live? I don't know, you don't know, but we can both guess, make predictions and use out gut feeling.

Canon will release a higher MP camera when they feel they can earn money from making one. It is as simple as that. Canon has been very successful with the Eos 5D Mark II, and with the D800 Nikon want a pice of that market segment as well. And Nikon needed to make a camera which does not only compete with the more then three year old Mark II - they need a camera which will look reasonably good also when compared with a probable Mark II successor.

Where I live there is a saying which would, roughly, translate into
"He who first called a name, he bears it"
Name calling like that is rude and does not lead anywhere.

No. It is just matter of fact. With your angry outburst, you are the one who comes of as 'incredibly biased' and 'feel(ing) bad' about you camera choice.

And? A Eos 1D mark IV would not have gained you anything either, and you still think the T2i and the 1D Mark IV are both professional cameras?
If I were to regret this move, yes, I would buy the 5D. I did not choose the T2i because it was so-called "cheap". I chose it because it has 99% the photo-quality of the 7D and 90% the photo quality of the 5D and costs 1/2 and 1/4 as much.
Again, you are just showing your own lack of understanding what constitutes a pro grade camera. It is not megapixel count, and actually not image quality at all.
Now, if Canon rolls out a 9D and a 6D, both (let's say) 48MP, and all the 9D has are extra features I don't need, then sure, I will get the 6D and laugh in the face of anyone who thinks I am "amateurish."
Well nobody said that except - interestingly - you. Which suggest you feel rather insecure about your status as a photographer. Since you are so touchy and defensive about it.
You want to make yourself feel like a big man by buying the most expensive thing on the market? Go right ahead, Mr. idiot.
Well, you called out that name the first time, and the second ... ;)
