I am a devout Canon afficianado.
Not to be rude, but statements like that are always an bad start in a post. Collectors are very often brand afficianados. But people whi actually use cameras as tools, as means to an end ... Brand matters very little. Canon makes good camera. So does Nikon. And Sony, Pentax, Oly, Panasonic, Samsung ...
My current camera is the T2i, which I bought 2 years ago.
I specialize in Gigapixel photography and time-lapse video.
Two things that rely heavily on the amount of pixels.
I was aware that Sony had a 24MP camera for a while now..
But 36MP?!
So, a 50% increase in pixels (over 24) in three years ... How is that surprising? Really? I'll say its a suprisingly slow development.
I want to know - how is this possible that the D800 has TWICE the pixels of Canon's top-end cameras..
Well, to be precise, it does not, 36 is not twice of 21
And when will Canon step up to bat?
When will it rain the next time where I live? I don't know, you don't know, but we can both guess, make predictions and use out gut feeling.
Canon will release a higher MP camera when they feel they can earn money from making one. It is as simple as that. Canon has been very successful with the Eos 5D Mark II, and with the D800 Nikon want a pice of that market segment as well. And Nikon needed to make a camera which does not only compete with the more then three year old Mark II - they need a camera which will look reasonably good also when compared with a probable Mark II successor.
