HDR question

I have tried Photomatix for quite a while. Problem is noise and blown highlights causing CA along things like branches of trees.

I have recently tried layers and masking/unmasking areas from 3 bracketed shots. In sunrise/sunsets etc this works pretty well leaving me with a more natural looking image.

Is above all unpredictable. Sometimes the output can really be stunning and close to natural, but in many occasions I spent hours without getting something usable.

To do the below HDR, I spent a whole day on my screen. I will try and redo it with Tufuse to see if I can sort it out more quickly and maybe even better, specially the sun.
