People shooting video with their DSLRs discovered several years ago that most of these cameras output live video through the HDMI port while shooting, and thus could monitor their shooting on a large screen. The video industry has long made small LCD monitors for location use for this purpose.

Not all cameras output live signals though the HDMI port. Some only do so during playback and review. You'll need to test this yourself, or in the case of an anticipated camera purchase check with the manufacturer or your dealer to confirm whether any particular camera does so. Most still camera reviews do not mention this capability (yet). I intend on doing so from now on. The recently previewed Panasonic GH2 does have live HDMI output, as does the Sony NEX-5.

I can confirm HDMI works all the time on the NEX (tested on my 24" computer screen which happens to have an HDMI input). The image isn't 720p though, more probably the same as the LCD screen res.

I wonder the utility of going from 3" (tiltable LCD on back of camera) to 5" ...

To carry an extra HDMI monitor that requires a tripod (larger), I would then carry the 5dMk2. Kind of defeat the purpose.

I should try it, because so far I fail to see the utility of it.

yes... it works I output to a projector and get a BIG view of the lcd ... very kewl

As I said on a different thread, I use a Lilliput 669HB HDMI monitor and it's a fantastic focusing and framing tool for video.

It cost 169$ including shipping on Ebay.

In live mode, the display looks blocky and is certainly not Full HD, probably not even 720p, as there is a clear difference between the quality of the live preview and the video replay (which is 720p on my NEX-3).

Is it a possibility that Sony crippled the HDMI output of the NEX-3? I've just double checked with the NEX-5. It's full HD in live and playback.

In live mode, the display looks blocky and is certainly not Full HD, probably not even 720p, as there is a clear difference between the quality of the live preview and the video replay (which is 720p on my NEX-3).

Other than any difference between the NEX-3 and NEX-5, are you connecting to a 1080p panel with the correct input resolution?
