I just got my new H5! It is replacing my 717, which I really liked. However, I observed a couple of strange things that I had not seen mentioned before. I would like your opinion as to wether I have a defective camera.

1. The camera makes a physical motor type noise all the time (when ON). I can hear it plainly when I place the camera near my ear. It makes the noise constantly when powered on, regardless of the mode.

2. I tried Movie mode, and that works as advertised. However, the built in speaker is very weak, much weaker than my 717. Is this normal?

3. On my 717, I liked to have the date/time superimposed on the photo, but I cant figure out how to do it on the H5. Clues?

Thank you!

Tracy

This actually has been mentioned before - back when the camera first debuted. It seems to be very common, though there are a rare few that seem to be operating more quietly than others - in general though, the concensus was that 90% or more of the users can hear a faint, audible whir or mechanical noise anytime the camera is on. It seems likely related to either the lens motor, stabilization system, or zoom mechanism.

Did you adjust the volume up? You can adjust the volume on movie playback with the 4-way arrow controllers - up and down. You may be turned way down. The sound quality isn't brilliant and stereo, but it is plenty loud to be heard at playback above normal room conversation.

You can't do that in camera. But remember that all photos taken are 'time stamped' internally, in the EXIF information. When looking for pics on a computer, you can always search for photos based on file name, size, date taken, date loaded, etc. There are programs available which can print the EXIF data that you choose on the photo - so I'm sure one of these aftermarket software programs can do some kind of batch processing to add the date stamp to the photo if you really like it.

Congrats on the new addition, and enjoy the H5!

i can only answer one of your questions, the Zoom noise is normal, i have been asked the same question by a kodak user who just bought the P712 yesterday and he thought there was somthing wrong, i heared the Noise out of the kodak and it was much MUCH louder than Sony(H5).

you might also hear somthing moving inside the camera when its turned off and rotated, that noise is also normal , dont worry at all.

Stick with this camera tracy444 as it really is a superb photographic tool--once you get used to in camera settings, these are important,as it is not really a point and shoot and forget me,sort of camera. I have found OUTSIDE that auto w/b is very very good indeed.. If on sunshine pics get a bit blue and if on shade a bit red,so auto seems to hit the spot most of the time.BTW mine has shot 5,000 + and still has a very slight noise, could be the IS as mentioned.

OK, thanks for the info. I dont know why there would be a motor type sound coming from the camera. It seems to me that a motor would be wasting battery power needlessly.

I know about the date associated with the files, I just got used to having the data on the picture itself. I am taking a lot of baby pictrues lately, and it makes it nice for myself and others to see the date right there on the picture.

Thank you for the help!

I have added dates on some photos afterward in Photoshop CS2 or, I believe PS Elements has that feature, as well.

Much the same method as others add their signature or copyright along an edge of a photo.

Tracy, it's the zoom motor. Does it anytime you zoom in or out. Yea, makes the camera sound "cheapo". Also, whenever you turn on/off camera the zoom goes back to it's original snugged in spot. Thus, you would hear the zoom going in and out.

Besides the zoom noise you also hear the noise from the voltage conversion circuits that convert the 2.5 volts into some higher voltage needed internally.

Take a look at this software:
---

Most digital cameras don't add datestamps to digital photos. TimeToPhoto helps you see the date and time when you snapped your photos. TimeToPhoto allows you to add datestamps or memory labels to selected photos with one mouse click. Just select the photos with TimeToPhoto and press RUN to get the date to print on all of your selected photos automatically. TimeToPhoto automatically reads the date of the original picture from a file and places the datestamp and/or any text label to your photo.

Everybody else seemed to answer the other ones, so I'll take care of #2. When you play back a movie on the camera the speaker is VERY low, even when turned all the way up. When you play it on your computer after transfering it it will sound fine. Mine actually come out a bit loud.

I got the H2 and i have the same about a mechanical noise! It;s there all the time as described on the begining of the tread in question 1.

And it is NOT the zoom motor or focus motor because the noise is hearing all the time, even when in play mode viewing photos from memory. Only when lens is getting in to the camera's body, the noise stops.

I'm very worried that there is a problem with my H2. I own it only 5 hours!

:(

Anyone that can confirm or not hearing this noise from H2 or H5?

help please!

I would suspect it is either the Autofocus mechanism or the Image Stabilization gyros, as when you enter the review mode, after a few seconds, just before the lens retracts, the noise stops. In review mode, you won't be using either AF or IS, so to me it is hard to figure which it might be. Shutting off IS or AF when in the 'shoot' mode does not shut off the noise, so no help there.. Personally my vote would be IS, as any focusing noise I would expect to vary a bit as it focused. Just an opinion, of course.

I had tried manual focus and IS in shooting mode and even turn it off (by the button next to power) but the noise is still there.
I'll read the links above and hope that i will be not worried after. ;)

So it is happening to anyone that owns H2 or H5?

What concerns me is that the noise is not stopping when turning off IS. It is there all the time the lens is out.

I visited some shops today but the noise inside the shops didnt let me hear the IS noise. So i dont know if the 2 H2's i saw in shop did the noise all the time... I'm affraid if my H2 is defective. If this happens in every H2 then it's ok. (noise even with IS set at off)

:(

Sorry for my bad english

P.S.

I'm so confused just because the one i bought was in an opened box, and there was not another to pick. So i want to be shure that it is not defective.
