Sony F717 is now priced at $799 (Best Buy, CompUSA, etc.)

Does this mean Sony is coming up with a new model? a F727 perhaps?

This is puzzling. The 707 did not drop last year as the 717 is now doing. Sure everyone was pricematching at Sears but it does seem rather strange. Maybe they aren't selling as well as the 707? . The market is flooded with choices. It's almost mind boggling how many new models were introduced at the recent PMA.The economy is down and the competition is tough. Maybe thats the real answer.

When I saw this permanent price drop in the latest Best Buy circular, I also thought about an imminent announcement of a new flagship model. However, CeBit has come (and gone?) without further releases, so perhaps this drop situates the 717 more reasonably with Sony's latest 5 mp digicam(?) and the rest of the 5 mp pricing landscape.

Curious to see whether Nikon follows suit with the 5700, or perhaps not if they're selling like gangbusters.

Take care,

Peter

I vote for a new high end camera. I know history shows them releasing the F-series later in the year but I think they are getting ready to at least announce a new "king".

Sony needs to build all the new 2003 features we've seen, plus a new one or two, into their new F-series sooner rather than later. Let's see... Fast lens with larger zoom. 6MP now that 5MP is more common. Full advantage of MS-Pro. New flash support.

Well at the very least you'd think that they'd be releasing something that takes full advantage of the memory stick pro.

If you bought your Sony 717 at Best Buy up to 30 days prior, Best Buy will match the present price of $799.

I had purchased mine at Best Buy on a preferred customer weekend so I got it for $100 off, but yesterday they gave me an additional $108 off the price I paid.

Won't happen before Photokina. Not if they're smart.

There is a lot more competition out these days than there was for the F707. I'm even going into some retail stores where the F717 is competing with its own sibling F707!! Odd.

So we're seeing a normal market response of the price moving because of plenty of stock (not overstock), and plenty of popularity for this model. It's been over six months into its cycle, so the price will likely hover at around the $700 point until the new model comes out.

Why do you say that they need to do so sooner? Or is it just wishful musing? ;-)

I'm not so sure that 6MP would do the trick here. They need to concentrate on a better quality of pixel rather than more of them.

I saw the price drop yesterday, is this permanent or do I have to get this deal before the end of the week? I also saw the 128MB stick for $49. Before I buy Sony, has anyone heard anything about larger sticks actually in production??

When is that again?

I'm just thinking of skipping over the whole F717 model. Interestingly, if the 717 is $700-800, what does that make remaining brand new 707s? I would rather get another one of those at a steeper discount or wait for a new high end, even if it is in the second half of this year.

Probably right but why do you have to ruin this for me?

I can't judge how the majority of others feel, but personally, I'm in a waiting mode just like I was when the 128MB sticks were the largest available for years (or was it just months?). Finally, they announced new larger sticks which are faster and no cameras to REALLY use them. I realize they needed to do this, but it just pushed me farther into the waiting mode. I see no reason to invest in the old sticks, the new sticks don't work in my cameras and though the V1 looks nice, it is not an F-series. You know that as much as anyone that you just can't go back.

So, my theory is that having a bunch of would be consumers sitting on their money, like myself, and not purchasing anything can't be good for any company.

It could be that everything I said is in fact true but for one thing. Instead of having a replacement, all they are doing now is lower pricing to entice us into buying their current top camera while they wait to get the replacement up and running.

I agree. I am in waiting mode too. Not that I'm not tempted to run out and get a 717 so that I don't have to deal with the white balance issues I'm having with the 707. They're minor issues, but I wish it was better. I think with the price of DSLR's coming down and the news that their weight will also come down, that's going to be where I spend my next camera $$.

I purchased my 717 from Sears, open box, for $899 and $135 for the "Master Replacement Plan" (plus tax). Yesterday I went to Sears with Comp USA ad in hand for a pricematch and was given a $253. credit on my charge card. I'm not sure how the guy came up with that number but being that it was much higher than I reckoned I wasn't about to complain.

Sony is shipping them today (3/17), vendors should have them within a day or two (or three).

Joe, how long ago did you buy your 717 at Sears? I also got it for $899 and the MRP but it was a few months ago.

Gee, I'm sure glad I read this thread yesterday! I bought the 717, about three weeks ago, from Circuit City. Today, they refunded me $234. Thanks to all, who suppied this information.

I haven't posted here very much but I've found that it pays (literally) to read it every day or so. I have been learning a lot here, again thanks to all.

JC45:

I'm in the same situation as you. I purchased my 717 from Sears with the MRP a few months ago (around December). I wonder how Sears would handle a replacement, should my 717 break, when I paid more for the camera then the current price. Any ideas?

Dear Everyone

Although some people expect new F717 is coming soon, there is no price drop of F717 in Japan at this moment (March 17th, around 91000 yen). I think that SONY did the price cut due to the much competition of the market. 5M is not so huge advantage anymore.

Hello,

I'm new to this forum but in case anyone's interested, J and R, State Street Direct, and BH Photo has the 717 for around $749. I got mine from J and R on Friday. Today, the other 2 stores have them for that price, it was $799 on Friday.
