experience with best price photo

To me it looks like trouble... but I'm the kind of guy that gets almost everything I need from B & H or other equally reputable company. In general... if a company has a price that is more than say 5 dollars on the hundred lower than B and H and you haven't heard of them I'd stay away.... just sayin...

Based on their price for a Canon 7D I'd say run now and don't look back.

I could get 30 people to write reviews for a company... or I could write them myself....

Any company that tries to pull the "longer life battery" stunt for a DSLR - even if it's just one customer - is fundamentally dishonest. There are no such items. Do not touch even with a 20-foot pole !

BigLeeH, thanks for that thorough review. I was thinking of buying a pretty expensive body from them but by reading your post, I learned my lesson. Just glad I saw it before buying. I'll be going with Newegg or Amazon.

Thanks for the replies. I was able to find an almost-new used 7D for a great price. Traded my 40D and a few accessories to make the deal.

AVOID. I ordered a Canon T3i at a good price. Two days later, got a call from them to "confirm the order". It was a basic upsell call, point being to sell me various accessories. Chris told me that the camera came with a "starter battery" only (untrue) and in spite of the fact that I already had a class 10 32GB memory card, I'd need to buy a special faster memory card that would support video with the camera. Both of these statements were patently false. For an additional $270, I was supposed to receive two extended life batteries, a 32GB memory card, a quick charge, and a simple UV filter. What I received was the battery that came with the camera, a worse battery (only 1120 mAh), the same memory card that I already had, the standard charger that came with the camera, and the filter. That's roughly $50 worth of stuff for $270. I've attempted to contact them four times to return these bogus addons, but received no response. Don't even think about purchasing from BestPricePhoto.

I placed an order for a Canon Camera on their site, now four days ago. They had a low price on Google and advertised free gifts with the Camera. Well, after placing the order online, the status has not changed at all, despite their promise of free express shipping with purchase of accessories (which I did). I called them several times today and got disconnected each time. After doing some research online about their bad rep, I Emailed them to cancel my order, as there is no way to do so in your “account.” I also gave them a call and got a sales rep who was more interested in the price I paid for the same camera from a legit seller rather than just canceling the order. At any rate, they cancelled it (or so I have been told) and I got an Email from them confirming it. Maybe they are overwhelmed, maybe they sold out of the item, but it just did not seem right to me. A competitor was able to complete the order in an hour and get it shipped to me, with UPS confirmation. I cannot recommend this retailer.

I ordered a 24-105 mm f/4 Lens from them about 3-4 weeks ago and their price was $895 compared to B&H which was $1091. After doing some research, I was pretty sure that they sell "grey market" items. But for almost $200 savings, it was too good to be true I thought. I found that if you have a sales receipt, Canon will warranty grey market stuff as if it were not. And even B&H sells grey market items.

So I took the plunge. I expected a phone call and got one. I placed the order on Sunday afternoon and on Monday morning got the call. I was expecting pressure but got none. They asked if I needed any filters. I told them I had a bunch of filters already. They said "okay", thanked me for the order and that was it. They shipped the lens that day and I got it later in the week with the free shipping option. The box was not a regular Canon box but everything was there, looking new. It did not have a warranty card but I registered it online and had no trouble.

If you order it from B&H you'll get the serial number on the receipt I think--not here. I got the impression that the guy who shipped the lens was not at the same address of the store. But everything worked out well.

When I unpacked the stuff I found a note that said if I gave it a 5 star rating on Resellers.com (or something like that) they would send me a free gift. Since I had had a good experience I did give them a good rating and a few days later called them and told them I had. A week or two later I got a UV filter for the camera.

It seems like they have a few items at very good prices but other things are normal or more expensive. I would only buy things like filters and lens, not a camera body from them. I think that something that is more sophisticated than a lens and that possibly needs to be sent in or sent back is better done at B&H.

Recently I wanted to buy another lens and this time I bought it at B&H. I slept a little better. But overall, BPP was professional. Just be ready and don't give in to any efforts to see you more than you need. And if it's a really good deal, it MIGHT be worth it, as in my case.

Hope this helps,

John

Anything you buy from bh comes with warranty??

B&H has a reputation of tremendous customer service on anything it sells. Over the years I've had to return a few things and they have always been very, very good. I don't know about their warranty policy on grey market items other than that they mark some items as "imported" right along side others that have the U.S. warranty by the manufacturer. But in any case, you never get anything but top customer service from B&H.

Same experience with me.

Whenever I buy photography equipment, I don't waste time with anybody else. I go straight to B&H.

Matter of fact...think I'll go see what a 7D is selling for.

Thanks....you just cost me money. lol

If I buy any photo equipment online, I will go to B&H, Adorama and maby a few others. I have had good success with some ebay-ers.

I have avoided this company after doing some research on them.

As for B&H customer services, I know some have had issues, but I personally had to return several items. All with no troubles.

Don't know exactly what grey market is, but I ordered a canon 60d from them last sunday, and it's the first time I order a camera from them.

Have been looking for a 7D 'deal' for a while. I was thisclose to pulling the trigger on the BPP deal today, but uncertain. They're Brooklyn, but BPP has a lot of excellent RR posts. I think I'll keep looking for a better seller.

I have had good experiences with Adorama, B&H, Henry's, 6AVE, ABEs and a couple of higher-rated eBay stores. I'm glad this thread topic was posted today!

Thank you for the review, BigLeeh. You definitely stopped me from getting my first dSLR from BPP. :-)

Letting these people have your credit card info could be as big a mistake as you'll ever make. Unscrupulous doesn't begin to cover it. In addition to my camera, a Nikon D7000, I ordered buy-one-get-one-free items. They weren't in the shipment. Then I discovered that they'd double charged me for the order. Major money. A bad review placed elsewhere prompted a call from them promising to ship the missing items and assuring me their bookkeeping department would correct the erroneous charge immediately -- and would I please withdraw my review. They did NOT correct the erroneous charge and the promised items haven't been received many days later. This is far and away the most unscrupulous merchant I've ever encountered. My next moves will involve our attorney general's consumer fraud division and the Better Business Bureau and my own lawyer, too.

The website of Best Price Photo looks just like the one for AtlaSoftware. The reviews for the latter are quite mixed -- 1 star or 4-5 star, with a significant number of 1 star ratings. It was enough to make me shy away from the company.
