Dealing with Dell

I ordered my Canon 70-200 f/4 L lens for a good deal ($485 after all coupons / discounts / mail-in rebates etc inlcusive taxes) and didn't have any problems. Aslo got SanDisk 2 GB card when there was a promotion.
All turned out to be good.

Just got the Canon 10-22 for under $600- from them so can't really complain. Check techbargains for daily specials and get in early.

oh okay... I guess their order processing is slower then other on line outlets. I just placed a order for a 20D via dell and have been waiting on my order cofermation.

Recently got 20D and 70-300 DO there. Good price, timely delivery. But with Dell you never know. They can run out of stock any day and you may end up waiting several weeks for your order. Check recent XT threads. But it's a newer camera, so less likely to happen with 20D.

Lev

The order processing is a little slow. I did not get the confirmation until the next day. The 1905 monitor I just ordered a couple of weeks ago. I never received a shipping notice or confirmation. I placed the order and went with standard ground. Three days later the monitor was at the door.

Yeah I'm starting to see that. I'm used to b&h or ecost.com where the order is done pretty fast and it's in their systerm quickly.

Anyways, I just got the order confermation, I'm excited about getting the 20D.

I'm getting the 20D and the 24-70mm lens there. Thing that isn't cool about the lens is it'll take 3 weeks to get it, but the 20D I should hopefuly get by the end of the week or into early next week.

I had to wait 3 weeks for my 20D because I got in on the end of the coupon blitz and they went on backorder. It took two cancelled orders and some help from a really nice rep to get me through to the end of ordering online on my third order which finally got me what I wanted at a price I wanted for the camera and kit lens.

Sometimes you can get the good deals by phone.

If they have your item "in stock" (whatever that means for them), they are fast. If not, be prepared to wait up to 3 weeks or more. Usually if you can get the price down enough, it is well worth the wait. I'm waiting on a lens about June 15 and a flash card (May 31-Jun 2) est. ship date.

There are several older threads on Dell if you want to try a search.

You never know what their specials will be. I ordered my daughter an A95 at BH (checked price at Dell that day) only to find out a day or two later I could have gotten a better deal with Dell. That's the way it goes.

Got the Canon 10-22mm and recently I got the 20D for $1064 with the Canon rebate. First payment for the 20D, no interest, is set for January 2006.

Shipping was very fast.

Got my 20D with lens very quickly from Dell

All of the things I have ever ordered from Dell have been trouble free, on time or usually faster, and no problems.

DC Guy,

Care to share what coupons / discounts you used? Thanks!

I ordered the 20D, 24-70mm lens, and a 1 gb CF card.

The lens according to the estimate will sihip in aug, which is three months from now. Their site said it would take 3 weeks to ship, not 3 months so I was rather angered by this. Even more so I wanted to use this lens with the 20D, at a family reunion I'm going to end of June and do a shoot with family members. I guess I'll have to settle with my 300D's kit lens.

But I think the 24-70mm will be worth the wait. I've heard a lot of good things about it.

I don't know about that lens. I wanted the one Phil used for the first bunch of sample photos, but the range overlaps the kit, so I opted for the 28-135 for longer reach.

That's an awful long time to wait. There's no guarantee that won't end up happening to me; they could advance the ship date, so I will have to keep my eye on it. The kit doesn't seem that bad in the meantime, but I am going to need the IS to consistently get better pictures.

Too many choices. If it's an L, you got a good price, and it's one you will use a lot, it's probably worth the wait. In the meantime, if you can beat the price and/or ship date, you can always cancel the order and order somewhere else. If you go that route, pick somebody reputable, but I don't need to tell you that.

Confounded thing with Dell is that today I got a shipment notification on a flash card that came to my front door several days ago. Threw me because I have another card and that lens backordered. Nothing at front door and was about to call when I rechecked the order # and saw that the shipment notice was indeed for the card I already received. They need to get that part of their system synchronized.

I think a lot of their time is wasted with needless calls if you can have more confidence in their online ordering system and other things that come up. I HAD to order online to get all the coupon discounts on my camera, but that is my least preferred way to order at Dell because it gets confusing. I order online at a couple other places for cheaper stuff all the time, but like to talk to a real person when I'm not sure or it is more costly.

My purchase from Dell was such a nightmare that I wish I had spent $200 more and purchased the camera from somewhere else..

I know what you mean. They royally screwed up my order, placed it on hold, then they lost it. My first attempt at trying to see what was up with it,I got this lady that had such a heavy accent that I couldn't even understand her, and after waiting on the phone all morning and getting through to her, I get disconnected. So finally again today, I was on the phone all morning. (mostly on hold and being sent here and there and here and there) The whole ordeal really angered me!!!!

BUT, in the end they managed to un-screw the order and get all the things I ordered straightened out. Sooo, that's good, and it turns out instead of thir of next week, I will get the 20D I ordered on Tuesday.

So like I've told my friends, Dell makes top quality computer systems, I give them that credit. Never had a lick of problem with any of my systems and they are all Dell, but their customer service SUCKS!! So does their order tracking!

Ok, well anyways, nuff said on that. Sorry you had a bad experience with them.

I don't. I look at as three days worth of work (that's about how long it took and 2 cancelled orders before the third one with the right price) and discounts and stress just like when I worked, only I never made the equivalent of what I saved when I worked. Including the $100 rebate which has been mailed, I saved $475.76 on $1599.00 (camera net cost $1123.24). Some people did even better because they had a couple more coupons to stack.

I'm thankful I did as well as I did and am beginning to love the camera and am working through some of it a little faster than I had expected.

Tonight I tried to order an extra battery and cheap flash card for my old camera and apply a concession coupon number they gave me for 50 bucks. The order system wouldn't take the coupon, good for six months. So I'll have to try another strategy. There will be some excuse, but I've got confirmation in my inbox, so we'll see.

To top it off my backordered flash card came unexpectedly today. Lucky I'm home most of the time. Saw the brown truck and had a hunch. Order status had it est ship May 31-Jun 2.

I got the shipment notification for another flash card about a week after I had already gotten it.

That's what it takes to deal with Dell. Buying my computer, and my daughter's computer was a cinch. I knew exactly what I wanted and told her what she wanted lol. ram rom video card better monitor blah blah. About a half hour or less on the phone for that.

Dell makes decent computers but they have a REALLY bad rep as a reseller. Check out their ratings:

http://www.resellerratings.com/seller1867.html

If I was buying a PC I'd consider getting it from DELL, but nothing else. I bought a Pocket PC from them and I found them to be very slow to deliver, their time estimates were highly misleading.
