One thing i cannot ascertain from the manual, is matrix metering the center selection on the AE-L/ AF-L dial?

yes, the middle is matrix.

top is center weight

bottom is spot

Yes, the center option is matrix metereing. The bottom one is spot metering and the top is central.

So far, but this is early, way better than my Canon 5D.

So far it has been excellent! I have had no overexposure issues, provided I don't make a mistake. The camera has no issues.

I have never had a problem with over or under exposure. I had seen some discussions here by people reporting both over and under exposure problems so I shot a gray card just to see where my camera was metering. The histogram of the gray card shot showed a spike right in the middle of the histogram.
