Has anyone started working on a D100 FAQ?

If not perhaps a Wiki (it's a simple web based white board system) could allow several people to contribute and edit.

Any thoughts? We really need to cut the noise in this forum down. I'd be happy to setup a Wiki if people are interested.

It get's my vote. Go for it.

Joe,

Sounds great to me. I've been working on a small FAQ section this last weekend, but it won't be ready for a little while (it will include accessories and probably lenses). A Wiki would be a nice thing to have, as long as people don't be retarded and write over someone else's important comments.

So, go make it, and let's see how it does. I think a permanent space and an "editable" space for FAQs would be ideal.

Great I would add to it if it was up..

I will throw in a vote in favor of a FAQ. I have only owned my D100 for a month and I am already tired of seeing the same questions asked here repeatedly! Doesn't anyone ever do a search before posting???

Jason,

You know what I'd like to see is a compendium of favorite settings for various situations listing them and reasons for them.

Take filters, for example. I asked about circular polarizers and skylights recently and it lasted almost 100 posts with vehement declarations of incorrectness by each proponent of the other's position. (e.g. UV works with DCs...no it absolutely does not!)

I'm not trying to be coy here. It would be great to see all sorts of various techniques to be able to make educated choices.

How about does anyone actually read the manual....

It is in there for a reason....well it was for me at least...

Now it resides in my camera bag in case I need it which is quite often...

Ok -- there seems to be good support for a Wiki. There are many variations of that software out there... does anyone have any suggestions?
I've been playing with a Java variation called Chiki.

What ever software is used it is important that at least two of us can host it and backups are distributed to the others -- i've seen far too many sites disappear for various reasons.

I'd be happy to provide hosting... just need a backup person.

I have a site and would be willing to help out but I'm not up on Java. (I hesitate to admit it but I built my site using Frontpage!) What exactly do you need?

LOL. It's those La Dolce Far Niente Society posts. :)

What I could do is accept emails from D100 owners (D1x/h owners too) and post their particular settings for a particular situation. Here a few events that come to mind:

1) Seasons/Holidays/Christmas events - many-colored stationary lights, dark backgrounds
1b) Snow?
1c) Fall - Taking photos of browns/reds/yellows/orange colors on trees.
2) 4th of July - fast moving lights, dark backgrounds
3) Car & Motorcycle Races
4) Indoor Sports events (Hockey, Basketball)
5) Outdoor Sports events (Soccer, Baseball, Football)
6) Indoor Individual/Group Competitions (Body Building)
7) Portraits

Wow. Looks kinda interesting already. I think Christmas lighting and related stuff would be good to start with. If anyone has their favorite settings, and can prove they work, email me.

And that's another thing. Making sure the settings actually work. I don't want some crazy poo email, telling me that Glow-In-The-Dark Santa photos and his Reindeer are best taken at 1/2500sec @ f/16.

Also: I won't necessarily be able to post photo examples, because I might go over my bandwidth limit and space, but I will post links and the comments made for reference.

Just mindstorming, but this is certainly a good idea as well, Rich.

Damn, this forum grew a brain on this Monday. Must be the Holiday Season and everyone trying to think of ways to avoid their inlaws. :)

Humor aside, it would be good to get someone's experience using CP filters. I took a series of shots with it and have no idea what I did. (Expensive toy!)

:o)

I agree. It would be nice to not have to wade through the same questions/answers over and over.

However, after spending several hours trying to get an answer (and several "searches") I understand why some folks don't do searches. Some of my searches have just totally confused me with loops going every which direction--with only half answers given before non-answers heading in tangents that are totally unrelated to the original query.

It would be nice to have the information without the sometimes "heated" discussions as well.

Thanks!

Its me, being a cynic again, but if you let any joe add/edit things you're going to get a lot of noise.

Why don't you just write it yourself, and accept comments via email, like every other FAQ maintainer?

Well, this is what I intend to do. The "editable" FAQ section can be left to Joe D and we'll see how it works. I would do it, but I'm just too busy with my other websites and forum. So currently, I'm working on a D100 FAQ and SB-80DX FAQ section. I've been doing this for the past few weeks. I hope to get it up by Thanksgiving so if ya'll get bored after your turkey dinners and smoozing with family, you can take a break.

On a side note, wouldn't it have been nice if the Ten Commandments were a Wiki?
