d10 front focuses PROOF!!

Where it focused was JUST outside of the AF sensor box. I'm of the belief that the actual AF sensor is actually larger than the box.

So, lay down some masking tape on the bottom edge of that ruler, except around the number you're focusing on.

Then use the top scale (well outside the focus point) and the one number that shows below (where you focused) to see if it still front-focuses.

Canon SLR's have a predisposition to focus on the closest thing in the AF sensor area that has good contrast.

This may be what's causing the problem.

Either do that, or a test like this:

You called me utterly stupid on my birthday. I agree to a point. The reason I click on these threads is because I truely want to see what the person is talking about. I feel many folks are being scared away needlessly due to these threads. If I listened to every D60 poor autofocus thread I would have missed out on a lot of fun times with my D60. As far as following the herd you could not be farther from the truth. Now on the stupid part you might have somethig there. :> )
If your tired of hearing about these issues, why do you reflect
your utter stupidity by clicking on these subjects, and responding
to them?
Leave the responses to those that ARE interested.
There are plenty of "Canon" can do no wrong" posts that those of
the herd mentality can respond to, and "parrot" the poster.

if i had lsitened to every stupid complaint on these threads
i wouldn't have bought my 10d with a front focus poblem

Something I found when doing my focus test was that sometimes my hands moved enough that the focus pont was not over what I focused on. The Canon software doesn't reflect the foucus point accurately if you lock on focus and recompose the shot.

I ran my test seven times and one time I had front focusing and the above is what happened. My hands moved. I'm too lazy to setup my tripod. It is packed away for a trip.

Bill, there are some good 10D's out there. I think DavidP would agree that all the trouble he had with his 1D was worth it once he got it squared away. I really can understand your frustration and I'm sure Canon will make it right.

I think you're got the "herd mentality" assessment backwards. It's those who wish to make a big deal out of THEIR camera problem wishing to make their "herd" bigger or make themselves "heard". Hence, all of Hugo's "welcome to the club" posts.

Was the camera mounted on a tripod and, if not, you're absolutely certain you didn't move. I know it's hard for me to hold absolutely still and with the wide aperture and shallow DOF you're using, just a little movement can make a difference.

You would think if they were going to insult me they would at least wish me happy birthday. BTW did you check out my screen capture. I ran that test inside the house and nailed it six out of seven times. The one bad one was my fault.

You need to do yourself a favor and get outta here and take some pics. This stuff will just grind ya down.

And no, sorry, I didn't look at your screencap. I don't dispute that some folks have problems with their cameras, and I know for a fact that some of them have no problems. And based on my observations, I'm confident that there's TONS more working-fine 10D's than problematic.

My issue is with the folks who whine about it and try to make the ridiculous claim that all 10D's are bad. That merely does a disservice to folks looking for info when the highly vocal minority out-shout the complacent majority.

Get outta here and go buy yourself a lens or something for a birthday present. I recommend the 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM or the Canon 15mm fisheye. Both are really fun lenses.
