CF vs Microdrive for speed and reliability

I can't deside between CF and microdrive. Alot of people say they're having problems with the microdrive.

Can anyone give me a comparisson in speed between the two? I think it's been proved that the lexar usb enabled cards aren't realy faster than the normal ones.

it seems that the only CF cards faster than microdrives are the type II cards like the pretec 640MB. Has anyone used this card or other type II cards.

I can't tell you anything about the speed difference, but I've had a Microdrive for close to a year and never had any problems with it.

It does show that in general the Microdrive is mostly on a par with CF. I to have used a Microdrive for a year and I am happy with the speed.

Until a 1Gb flash card turns up at a reasonable cost I will continue to use the Microdrive.

In the UK a 256Mb CFII card is about £105. A 512Mb card is £280+ The 1Gb microdrive can be had for as little as £229. I also hear that IBM have now extended the technology and 20Gb drives could be on the way..

Of course the cost differential may be different where you are...!--PaulJ

Microdrives and $600+ in Canada, and CF prices have not dropped here...NOT FAIR!!!!

I have a variety of storage media including a 1 GB MD and several CF cards ranging from 65-256 MB. Performance is probably dictated by a variety of issues including the amount of on board memory/processing power of the camera and the type and size of the storage medium. In general, I have noted that there is a significant difference in write times between the CF card and the MD (though I haven't measured it). As, the MD fills up, this difference becomes even more pronounced (akin to the decrease in performance seen when a hard drive fills up). I have had my MD about a year and have exposed it to 100% humidity, sub-zero freezing conditions, altitudes of 9K+ feet without a glitch.

Here is one site where they were compared (CF/MD), and if I recall correctly, the results were equivocal in one camera model and significantly different in another.
