Hello all,

For my upcoming vacation I will be planning to add more and better audio to my videos. The mic that I use (Sennheiser mke 400) has quite a bit of background noise, even at optimal settings.

Is there any good mobile app for android that helps to reduce or remove the background noise? I've seen plenty options, but I'm looking for input from people who have experience with it.

Any input is welcome, thanks.

Can you post an example of what you consider to be "background noise"?

Can you post a short clip of video that has a lot of background noise you would like to get rid of?

Or if you have a longer video already uploaded to youtube, can you state the specific time mark in the video where there is background noise you want to eliminate.

The number one reason that there is too much "background noise" is because the mic is too far away from the sound source you want to capture.

With an on-camera mic like the Sennheiser mke 400, if I want to record someone talking, I want that mic no further than 18-inches / .5 meter away from the mouth of the person talking.

Anyway, I think we can all help you out better if you could provide some samples of what you want to eliminate.

I'm sorry for the late reply. A lot going on in my personal life atm. I think the best example for what I mean is this video (first half): Sennheiser MKE 400: One MAJOR flaw in an otherwise perfect vlogging mic - YouTube

Even when I put it on the + setting as he suggested, and lower in camera sound I still considerable background noise in my clips.

OK, so that is more commonly known as self noise, or simply as hiss.

It could have something to do with Sony audio preamps, too. Don't know how good they are in your camera.

I have a Sennheiser MKE 440. There is virtually no hiss and I can record in a very quiet room to test this. If I record to a camera (Canon 80D) there will be hiss no matter what settings though recommended is low on the camera, high on the mic. If I record to my Zoom F6 there is hardly any self noise. I can then feed that out to the camera as line-out with an in-line attenuator and set the camera as accepting sound via an attenuator, and now the sound is very good, certainly usable without further processing. The sound from the F6 is even better but you should be able to see how different preamps affect the sound. The preamps in the F6 are much better than the camera.

Is there any good way to combat this hiss via editing on mobile apps? Audio is still a very new field for me that I'm trying to explore.
I am sorry that I am not familiar with editing on mobile apps.

Which app are you using though? There might possibly some sort of plugin or feature for that app that will reduce noise.

One other thing to try is test raising the gain in the camera a little bit at a time. I think I remember something about some Sony cameras having a weird quirk where the in-camera preamps were quieter when the gain was adjusted a little bit higher than the lowest setting.
