Am I the only one with this....

especially with the grip.
I have this camera and all this stuff with it and I just dont know
what to take pics of. I like taking pics of poeple and weddings and
stuff like that.
I just sit here doing nothing all the time. You can only take so
many pics of your wife and kids.
What is there to really shoot? I have done some outside thing when
I first got my camera. Like a barn and some trees and not much
else. I just dont feel right walking around taking pics all
day...People looking and all that.
What do you people shoot when you cant shoot your favorite
things?Do you care about others watching you?

First off, the great joy we are all discovering with digital photography is that it is free.

So take pictures.

I take my D300 with me everywhere. I take pictures all the time, every day.

Next thing you should do is start a Pbase account and submit a PAD (photograph a day). Look at your month and you'll start to see what catches your eye. Rate your pictures out of 10 and look at how they could have been better.

Suddenly you'll notice that the 7-10's are becoming more frequent.

My typical month covers the family, activities, architecture, birds, dogs, landscapes and humor. I notice an ever increasing amount of black and white.

Above all, experiement and have fun.
Good luck
Rob

PS - I was wondering round the streets near my office yesterday with no decent shots. We are situated opposite Pixar sudios in Emervville. Looking at the studio entrance i noticed that someone had stuck the word Eisner on the stop sign. there was my photograph :-)

...daughter, and am not yet bored! : )

But, I know what you're saying, and the answer is simple: why do you want to photograph anything at all? Once you've answered that, then you know what to do. Of course, doing it might not be so easy.

I'll give some example from what I want to do that I've not done and would like to do. Visit a third world country and take pics. Climb the Japanese Alps (or any Alps) and take a few keepers. Get an underwater housing, learn to scuba dive, and take underwater pics. Go somewhere where there are bound to be thunderstorms and get some pics of the awesome thunderclouds, maybe a tornado. Take some nudes of some really gorgeous women! : )

Anyway, you get my drift. The challenge is not finding something to photograph, but finding something interesting to do, and take photographs while you are there (which brings me to the last example I gave!).

For me, taking pictures is as much as keeping memories as creating art. If I had a photographic memory (pun intended), I'm not so sure I'd be as interested in photography as I am.

As a final note, you might ask what I'm doing with 15,000+ photos of my daughter. You see, I have next to no pics of me when I was a kid, and it's like the best part of my life is gone in a way. I'm hoping that my daughter, when she's my age and older, will cherish these pics. Not as works of art, but as links to her past.

That's why I keep an S45 around and take videos, too. Of course, those are mostly of her crying and throwing a tantrum, for me to use as examples of all the sh*t I had to put up with from her, when she's dishing out even more in her teens! : )

Oh yeah, one more thing, I do care if people are watching me take pics -- it makes me very uncomfortable unless they are people I know. I hate p*ssing when somebody's in the stall next to me, too! : )

Please feel free to criticize, make suggestions, and edit my photos. But, if you don't mind, please be courteous and not pass off my photos as your own (or anyone else's!).

Currently, pretty much any photo I post will be with the Canon 300D and 35mm f 1.4L lens, but on occasion I may post from other cameras and lenses.

As I face the same dilemma. Think of themes for yourself - maybe they are ones covered by the Challenges or ones you make up.

Try and build a variety of images that conform to that theme. I am working through a few now. Good to find themes that can work for your area.

One such theme might be neglect - I find there is a lot of colour and strength in photographing rust and decaying buildings and such.

Pick a theme then challenge yourself to interpret it in different ways and find alternate (not obvious) images that answer the theme. A couple of themes can keep you very busy and make you look at things as you walk through your day. You suddenly really look at stuff!

Yes, but have you taken the ultimate picture of your wife and kids? :)

You really have to find subjects you enjoy taking pics of (and in your case, you mentioned people (lots of them around :), kids, wife and weddings). What else are you interested in? Nature? Maybe I'm fortunate because I live in a mid-sized city with easy access to many areas of interest.

Are there not many photographers where you live?

Since you like taking pics of people, why not take pics of people watching you and post them here so we can see them...sort of like street photography....(it's also a sure way to get them to stop watching you...especialy the camera shy ones :).

simliar thing yesterday...was driving in Cinci and saw a sign that read 'left lane keep left' to me it was very funny, especially if you saw the layout of the road. if I had a camera I would have shot it but the one in a few days I left even my P&S home :(

my wife commented on how many pics of my son, dogs, house, things, etc...but with very few of me in them. she's not a photo buff and while I can get a few from her, my thing now has to be using a tripod and what not.

great point really. sometimes we just don't see things as others do until well...they show us. getting that one special shot of her could change thigns totally.

the other side of things...my wife felt the same way when she started seeing some pics of herself. that was her personal motivation to exercise....and it worked. she's been much more active since.
She may think she's out of shape, and hates it, but if you can take
that one single spectacular shot that makes her go WOW, she'll
think differently.

I live in Henry Co.TN..USA
Well what are you into? I don't know anything about the area, but I took a quick look at the map. Assuming that's "Henry County", it looks like you can't be more than 10 or 15 miles from Kentucky Lake. Looks like a pretty big lake on the map. There has to be tons to shoot there. Sunrise/sunset over the lake, beaches, people on beaches, lakefront stores, boats, boat docks.

A little farther away (5 miles) I see Fort Donelson National Battlefield ( http://www.nps.gov/fodo/ ). Surely there has to be something there worth shooting. I also see Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge( http://tennesseerefuge.fws.gov/ ). There's also Land Between the Lakes ( http://www.lbl.org ). They have scenic hiking, a Bison range, and it looks like a lot of other pretty stuff to see. If you get one of those paper state maps, they have so many other small parks listed on them (the online one's only seem to list the big parks).

As you can tell from above, I especially like nature/scenic photography. But there are other things you can do. Find an old historic town nearby and shoot some of the buildings. Or just for fun, go to Paris and shoot some pics. Maybe you'll find something gimmicky there that tries to play itself off as Paris, France. Or maybe you can try to make it look like Paris, France. Something strange like that. Just have fun.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their help, ideas, and inspireing me to try even more different shots.

I found some of you to have a good humor and that made me laugh....heheehehe...I like a good laugh!!!

I guess I will take the one guys suggestions and take some nudes .....heheheh....I better not...But very tempting indeed.

Like I said, I do like shooting people more than a flower or tree, or building so I guess I will just try some street photography. Hey thats what that 70-300 can come in handy for.

Well again thanks to all and I hope everyone has a good day and shoots that special pic they have tried so hard to get......LATER...

Nudes! Let me tell you a story.

My first digital camera was a Fuji Finepix 1400. I outgrew it within a month because most of the pictures actually sucked. The only time I could get a fair photo out of it was in very good light. Even with the flash, the thing was hard pressed to take a decent photo. I shot maybe 100-200 candids at parties with this camera.

My second was a Sony DSC-F707, which I still have. Soon after I got into more serious compositions and not so much candid photography I started asking my wife to "pose" for me. That progressed into semi-nudes and then full nudity, and even outdoor nudity in parks and wildlife conservation areas. Being in those parks with my wife, loving to see her nude in such places, I discovered wildlife photography. The bar just keeps rising.

Anyways, to make a long story short, the reason I bought the Rebel was because of my newfound passion for photographing nudes and wildlife photography.

My wife and I now find ourselves going shopping and buying clothes for her that exhibit some particular style or composition or facet of her body during our "nature" outings, where we photograph birds, mammals, amphibians and, of course, her clothed, semi-nude and nude body.

I never in my life thought my wife would do outdoor nudity but I kind of coaxed her into it by showing her pictures of herself that show her in a good light. She used to be a pinch overweight and, due to us doing outdoor nudes over the past couple years, she has found reason to lose weight. Our treks and hiking outings have helped her lose the weight she wanted to lose and has made us closer than ever. The one thing that really exhilarates me is the ourdoor nudity as it's somewhat "naughty," especially if you're in an area that has regular pedestrian traffic and you want to get that sort-of-quick nude photo before someone comes along.

Anyways, I just wanted to share with you what prompted me to purchase the Rebel and what keeps me interested in taking at least a photo a day, everyday. Take a look at my galleries ( http://gallery.codemain.com/hmetal ). You won't find any nudes in there but you will find some slightly "risque" photos plus a whole lot of wildlife photos from all over Ontario, Canada, amongst other various photos.

The wife lets you hire models. That's great :) Sounds kinda funny. Reminds me of wives letting thier husbands get a Maxim magazine with pictures of models, but you get a model and take your own pictures. What an idea!

I have about 15,000 pictures from college and I'm only in a handfull of them. I've been pretty much the only one taking the pictures, so half the time now pepole question if i was even there or not. "Oh, you were at so&so's party? I didn't remember" Probably because i'm not in any of the pictures they look at to remember it.

I think it's a good idea to start getting in some. It'll be easier seeing how tons of pepole are getting digicams now.

While I would really recommend hiring nude models to shoot, in the event that doesn't float you boat, this is a great book:

The A to Z of creative photography

Has many examples with SLR camera settings on how to do some creative photographs of everything from misty waterfalls to wacky zoom effects in a downtown city. That is what I look at when I want to shoot something different and learn a new technique.

Can you briefly explain how this service works (can I hire a model there?)? I would like to start photographing nudes (art, not porn) and don't know where or how to find the models. I am willing to pay for photo sessions, and if necessary, use their studio rather than mine. Thanks.
Cheers,
AnnT
